Position Summary:
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks a full time, EPA non-faculty Project Director to coordinate a new study funded by the National Cancer Institute entitled Evaluating the Impact of Federal Legislation on Internet Tobacco Sales. This is a large-scale national study of the sales and marketing practices of websites that sell tobacco products. The study will assess compliance with new and forthcoming federal regulations affecting these sales, with a focus on reductions in tax evasion and youth access. The position requires experience related to technology, public health, oversight of large-scale data collection efforts, IRB applications, and project management. The Project Director will have regular contact with the research partners, policy makers, government agencies, and will supervise two full time research assistants. The Project Director will serve a critical role in the communication and coordination among internal and external study partners, dissemination of research findings, as well as assuring the timely implementation of research and practice projects related to tobacco use prevention and control.
Education Requirements:
Masters degree in public health, behavioral science, or related experience preferred
Qualification and Experience:
1) A minimum of a masters degree in public health, behavioral science or related field or commensurate experience preferred. 2) A minimum of two years experience with project management coordination, preferably in the planning and implementation of complex public health research projects is required. 3) Strong project management, written and verbal communication skills are required. 4) Strong computer and technology experience and troubleshooting skills are required; familiarity with relational database design and various web technologies, including javascript, jquery, PHP, and HTML are highly valued experience building websites and or programming is preferred but not required; familiarity with how these technologies work and understanding of browser compatibility issues is important to facilitate troubleshooting while working with the websites in the study. 5) Applicants with job experience with beta software testing and writing bug reports would excel in this position. Ideal candidates will have ability to reproduce software errors and communicate effectively with software support teams. 6) A comfortable ability locating, assessing, comparing, and selecting software packages to accomplish pre-defined tasks is a necessity. 7) An applicant who is not an expert in the technology field may still be the perfect candidate for this position if they possess the ability to research problems, locate the correct solutions, and execute them with the help of online search tools. 8) A strong attention to detail is crucial for this position, as small oversights can become large errors months later that become quite costly to rectify. 9) Experience conducting and interpreting basic statistical analyses with SPSS software preferred. 10) Our research team uses both Windows and Mac operating systems, basic understanding of both preferred. 11) Preferred software experience includes: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, social media applications, and assorted web programs and technologies 12) Demonstrated experience with scientific writing in the form of grant proposals, IRB applications and or publications (e.g. journal articles, reports, book chapters, etc.) preferred 13)Experience in tobacco control policy research or any aspect of tobacco use prevention and control is preferred.
