Position Summary:
Position summary: The person in this position will be responsible for identifying opportunities for SOG faculty and staff to become involved in public policy matters of statewide significance. This position will also support SOG faculty and staff as they engage in applied public policy advising, research, and writing. An important part of this work will be developing and maintaining relationships with state and local policymakers, including elected officials, legislative staff, state agency staff, and local officials. The person in this position will also need to foster strong relationships with SOG faculty and staff and develop a deep understanding of their areas of expertise and interest. The mission of the School of Government is to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. By working to connect SOG faculty and staff with emerging public policy issues, the person in this position will play a key role in advancing the School's mission.
Education Requirements:
Masters degree in public administration, public policy, or related field or a professional degree. Applicants with a J.D. are welcome to apply but should note that this is not a legal position.
Qualifications and Experience:
Ideal person in this position will have experience in or potential to (1) develop relationships and work closely with state and local policymakers as well as substantive experts such as faculty and professional staff; (2) communicate clearly and effectively with policymakers in a manner that reflects an understanding of the structure, organization, and authority of North Carolina state government; (3) understand and communicate effectively about the work of the School of Government; (4) manage complex projects and partnerships; (5) develop and identify funding for new applied public policy research; and (6) work independently and take initiative.
