Position Summary: The University of North Carolina seeks an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and collaborative librarian to serve as Middle Eastern Cataloger. Middle Eastern and African Studies are growing areas of research interest at the University and the Library has recently responded to this change by hiring a full-time bibliographer in this area. There is an active and engaged community of scholars who promote the use of vernacular language materials in their classes as well as using them in their own research. The Middle Eastern Cataloger works in a collegial environment of cataloging specialists. Cataloging is done using OCLC's Connexion Client and the library's Innovative Interfaces local system. The position is in the Original/Adaptive Section of Resource Description & Management and reports to the head of the department. Catalogers at the UNC Libraries contribute national-level cataloging through NACO, BIBCO, and other PCC programs.
Education Requirements: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science, or advanced degree in a related field.
Qualification and Experience: *****Required*****ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science, or advanced degree in a related field. Fluent reading knowledge of Arabic; fluency in English. Cultural understanding of the Middle East. Previous cataloging experience in an academic or research library setting. Working knowledge of automated cataloging systems and national standards (e.g., AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC21 formats, the ALA-LC Romanization table for Arabic). Experience with the principles of authority control. Strong attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Effective organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and flexibly with a wide variety of staff in a rapidly changing environment. Commitment to a high level of service to faculty, staff, and students. Commitment to professional participation in areas relevant to the position. *****Preferred*****Reading knowledge of Persian and French. Experience with: Innovative's Millennium system; NACO, BIBCO or other PCC programs; electronic cataloging support tools, such as Classification Web and Cataloger's Desktop; cataloging electronic resources; knowledge of Middle East Librarians Association Best Practices and emerging RDA standards
