Position Summary:

The Department of Health Behavior in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applications for a Tenured/Tenure -Track position in Global Health beginning Summer/Fall, 2013. Appointment is anticipated at the level of Assistant Professor but especially qualified individuals at other ranks may be considered.


The Department seeks faculty members who conduct social and behavioral science research that addresses health problems in global settings, with a particular interest in candidates who conduct research in Asia. Candidates should conduct research that builds on ongoing global health initiatives at UNC in the areas of HIV/AIDS research, other infectious diseases, chronic diseases or other major global health problems such as water and sanitation, or tobacco use. Ideal candidates will be engaged in interdisciplinary, mixed methods, and collaborative research central to developing, implementing and/or evaluating interventions in global settings.


Specific responsibilities will include applying for and carrying out funded research, teaching graduate level courses and advising graduate students, and participating in Department, School and University governance committees.


Faculty of the Department address social and behavioral health determinants and outcomes across a wide variety of health problems, in diverse populations, and through diverse settings in the US and internationally. Conceptual emphases of faculty research include health communication, interpersonal and social processes, and community engagement. A range of quantitative and qualitative research methods are represented in the work of the department’s faculty. Training programs lead to MPH, MSPH, and PhD degrees and prepare students for careers in public health research, teaching, administration, and practice. Across all these areas the Department is committed to research and practice that advances social justice and especially seeks candidates who will add to the diversity of its faculty.

Education Requirements:

An earned doctorate in international or global health, behavioral or social sciences, medicine, or related disciplines.

Qualification and Experience:

Candidate should have research and practice experience pertinent to global health and health behavior. Preferred candidate should demonstrate ability to establish and collaborate in multidisciplinary, funded research programs, as well as a clear track record of scholarly accomplishment. This individual should also have experience working with graduate students as well as a commitment to graduate-level teaching.
