Department: Office of Technology Develop
Position Summary: The Director of the Office of Technology Development (OTD) reports to the Vice Chancellor of Research and is responsible for the management and commercialization of intellectual property at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Director leads the OTD staff, and works with UNC researchers and administrators, the campus and regional entrepreneurial communities, and other external parties to promote and support the entrepreneurial activities on the campus and facilitate transfer of inventions to market.
Education Requirements: A Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree in a relevant field of science, engineering, business or law is highly desirable.
Qualification and Experience: The individual filling this position must have substantial experience with research technology-intensive industry and or with a technology transfer program at a major university. It is strongly preferred that the individual in this position have at least five to seven years of technology transfer or closely related relevant experience. The Director should demonstrate familiarity with patents and their role in business practices; knowledge and skills in marketing intellectual property; negotiating licenses; and making effective use of in house and external legal counsel. This individual must have a familiarity with the research mission of a major university. He She must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators and the business community. The individual filling this position must also have experience in managing a complex organization, including working with staff to ensure that the goals of the Office and the University are met.
