The Director, Business Development/UMII-L will be responsible for all aspects of Business Development and the UMass Innovation Institute at Lowell (UMII-L). This position will be hired as a Director or Executive Director level based on the candidate's background and experience. UMII is a UMass system-wide, multidisciplinary institute focused on applied research and innovation that is complementary to UMass academic research and that creates customer value in all forms for gov't. industry & academic partners.
This involves directing the overall New Business Development initiatives with regional companies, & working with the current BD Team (includes representation from compliance, intellectual property, & contracts) to help fulfill the goals of the newly initiated UMass Innovation Institute-Lowell (UMII-L). This responsibility will include strategic direction, operations, & sustainability of the UMII-L effort and helping the BD Team fulfill their obligations to facilitate the implementation of research collaboration once a contact has been established between a faculty PI & a company. The UMII Director will also be responsible for interactions with faculty, Office of Advancement, & external business organizations to identify candidate companies wherein a strategic relationship (research collaboration, co-ops, continuing ed., hiring) would be mutually beneficial, thus helping to serve as a portal for long-term, vibrant industry relationships.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
-Must be a U.S. citizenship or permanent resident
-Master's degree in business, science, engineering, or related field
-Eight or more years of experience working in an industrial research organization, performing product development, commercialization, or similar role
-At least 5 years of demonstrated business development expertise in technical fields
-More than five years of experience in the management, operations, and administration of academic/technology related programs, projects, and enterprises with a demonstrated track record of success, competence, professionalism, and teamwork
-Proven ability to work effectively with faculty, University administrators, government/industrial representatives, and students
-The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
-Proven leadership and organizational planning/execution/oversight skills
-Experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects is preferred
-Demonstrated expertise in scientific programs, proposals, and research budgeting
-Must have superior written and verbal communication skills
-Must have demonstrated skills in building teams and working in a collaborative environment
-Must have the ability to communicate with technical personnel, senior management and to elucidate technical concepts
-Ph.D. in science or engineering preferred
-Experience in implementing industry-university collaborations
-Experience in both industry and university environments
-Experience in marketing and communications for academic/technology activities
-Web knowledge and public relations experience

****Continuation of General Summary of Position****
1.Strategy: Develop key strategies & initiatives to implement the UMII and provide for long-term sustainable growth. Develop strategic plans for connecting the core competencies of the University with regional companies. Interact with the Offices of CVIP, Advancement & Career Services to understand and appreciate any legacy connections with companies including strategic discussions with upper management (C-Level) of these companies. Work with current Business Development Managers (BDMs) to facilitate faculty-company meetings either on campus or at the customer's site. The UMII Director will be expected to lead negotiations with high level personnel of companies when negotiating unique considerations.
2.Faculty Partnerships: Interact with the faculty to establish communications and understanding necessary for the success of UMII. This includes: obtaining faculty buy-in to the UMII system; working with faculty, industrial, and federal partners to develop effective research programs; building a culture of responsiveness and compliance; being able to understand and have the ability to articulate the value proposition of faculty research to outside companies.
3.Management: Manage UMII program functions. These activities include: coordination with UMass administrative personnel on implementation of projects; recruiting, training, supervision and mentoring of the UMII Staff; and financial planning. Ensure that the BD Team is working together effectively on activities related to generation & implementation of industry projects and relationships, e.g.
a) Facilitating joint call/meetings with PI and new company
b) Helping to initiate solutions for SOW/budget/IP/restrictive work or any other issues in an efficient manner
c) Promoting the University breadth of capabilities and how they are beneficial to the company, including the co-op program and the Core Research Facilities
d) Maintaining constant contact throughout the process, including helping the PI with necessary forms
e)Following the contractual work to completion to ensure on-budget and on-time performance in the spirit of "a happy customer will come back for more"
f) Initiating discussions for follow on work
4.Process Development and Implementation: Develop protocols, procedures and practices to effectively develop and process industrial agreements working in collaboration with ORA, CVIP, OIC, Office of General Counsel, A&F and other offices. Negotiate, execute and administer industrial agreements. Ensure that the UMII is in compliance with all University policies, federal, state and local laws and IRS regulations. Work with the Director of Research Compliance on sponsored research projects to ensure an appropriate compliance control plan is developed and implemented.
5.Sustainability, Visibility and Branding: Work with the VPR Office and UMII stakeholders to develop a world-class, flexible, responsive, customer friendly, effective innovation center. Develop UMII brand and market UMII to existing campus personnel, potential external industrial clients and government agencies. Oversee the creation of UMII literature, electronic media and other marketing tools to promote the visibility & growth of the UMII. Act as liaison between other UMass campuses and the System office.
