The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for the position of Director of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP). The Director provides leadership, vision, and direction to CVIP and leads a group of technology transfer professionals to identify, evaluate, protect, market, and license technologies developed at UMass Amherst.
Responsibilities include developing and maintaining faculty relationships, educating faculty and researchers about intellectual property management and commercialization, building relationships with UMass Amherst research centers to promote technology innovation, reviewing, negotiating, and drafting agreements, and supporting a broad range of campus activities to promote technology development and commercialization. In addition, the Director will develop and maintain networks of industry and investor contacts to facilitate technology transfer, create licensing and IP-based business arrangements, and manage relationships with industry and academic partners and external IP counsel.
The Director reports to and advises the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement on the Amherst campus and serves as the primary interface with the five-campus University system through the offices of the Executive Director of CVIP and the General Counsel in the UMass President’s Office.
Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a science or engineering field required with MBA preferred; demonstrated understanding of technologies in both physical and life sciences; ability to manage a revenue-generating, entrepreneurial operation within the context and culture of an academic environment; ten or more years of experience in an academic setting doing technology marketing, business development, entrepreneurship, IP protection, and licensing as well as experience in negotiating, drafting, and executing or advising on University-Industry agreements; seven or more years of decision-making leadership and management experience in an academic technology transfer program; high degree of technical and business expertise as well as a solid understanding of the legal, financial, and entrepreneurial issues involved in the protection, licensing, and commercialization of academic intellectual property; demonstrated success in agreement negotiation, financial management, goals achievement, and strategic planning; ability to balance public benefit and faculty service with revenue and expense management; exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to inspire a team of technology transfer professionals.
