University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Academic Director for its Legal Studies Bachelor of Science degree program. UMUC is one of 11 degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). Working adults, military personnel, and other students around the globe are achieving their academic goals through UMUC's innovative educational options, including online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends. Currently, more than 42,000 students attend UMUC nationally, and an additional 37,000 students attend UMUC at on site classes in more than 25 countries throughout the world; about 58,000 students are active duty military, veterans, and their families. In 2012, UMUC had over 262,000 online course enrollments.
The successful candidate will join the department of Business and Professional Programs (BAPP). The new Director will lead The Undergraduate Schools’ (TUS) Legal Studies Program by directing, managing, and continuously improving the overall program and supervising faculty to assure teaching effectiveness. The TUS Legal Studies Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to be successful in a variety of careers in the legal environment. The scholar-practitioner faculty who teach in the Legal Studies Program are at the forefront of their field and bring practical experience to the classroom.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Curriculum and program development, learning outcomes assessment and continuous improvement;
Recruitment, management, development, and support of program faculty;
Fostering and maintaining professional connections in the field;
Supporting students in the program, and other job related duties as assigned.
This is an academic administrative position: academic directors teach just one course onload each year.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree is required from an accredited institution of higher learning.
At least three years teaching at the university level required, preferably in distance and/or adult education;
Four years of managerial experience in a professional setting and demanding work environment is required;
Must be comfortable using information technology and related teaching and management tools;
Experience in presenting effectively to both large and small audiences is required;
Must have demonstrated supervisory and excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to foster and develop internal and external relationships to further develop the program are musts.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Administrative experience managing substantial programs and large numbers of employees also preferred;
Knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or PeopleSoft is preferable;
Admitted to a State Bar
