The University of Kansas is seeking candidates for the top leadership position at the University in professional and continuing education. The candidate we seek will bring excitement and vision to the administration of professional and continuing education in the state of Kansas and beyond. KU’ Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) serves a wide variety of professional training and outreach needs through the Center for Professional Education Programs (CPEP); Center for Engineering and Interdisciplinary Professional Education (CEIPE); International Continuing Professional Education; Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute and the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). In addition, PCE’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides statewide and Kansas City metro area educational outreach to citizens 50 years of age and older. KU Medical Center’s Continuing Education/Professional Development, located in Kansas City, is aligned with PCE, and offers a broad range of accredited clinically-related programs for health professionals, locally, statewide and nationally.
Strategic Leadership (60%)
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of the KU Edwards Campus, the Assistant Vice Chancellor leads all activities of KU Professional Continuing Education (PCE) and develops the strategic direction for the organization. The Assistant Vice Chancellor works at the executive level with KU administrators, deans, academic leaders and faculty members, and staff to establish new opportunities for professional program development that will benefit the learners, the university, and the academic departments. Working with local, regional, national and international organizations (private and public sector), the Assistant Vice Chancellor develops effective strategies for creating new programs and revenue opportunities, while continuing the University’s commitment to high educational quality. Strategic direction of PCE will include partnerships with KU Medical Center, other professional development organizations at KU and interrelationships with academic programs at the Edwards Campus. It is the responsibility of the Assistant Vice Chancellor to set strategic direction for the future of PCE while balancing the education mission of the University, private and public sector needs, and financial viability.
Financial Development and Management (20%)
The Assistant Vice Chancellor is responsible for the fiscal health of the unit and leads efforts to both generate revenue and contribute to the mission of the University and the Edwards Campus. This leader is also responsible for grant and fundraising for both the programs of the unit and collaborative efforts with the academic unit’s. Working with the Edwards Campus Administrative and Fiscal Services Director, the Assistant Vice Chancellor ensures appropriate financial analysis and strategic business decisions and the necessary business processes to support the entrepreneurial/revenue-generating programs within PCE.
Engaged Scholarship (10%)
Consistent with the University’s strategic plan, Bold Aspirations, the Assistant Vice Chancellor will develop appropriate opportunities for engaged scholarship relating to the programs delivered by PCE. Working collaboratively with KU faculty and research units, works to develop strategic opportunities as well as opportunities to lead research in public and private sector organizations that results in professional development and training programs that are grounded in research results.
Campus Leadership and Professional Service (10%)
The Assistant Vice Chancellor will serve as a member of the Edwards Campus leadership team and will play a role in the development of program delivery to the greater Kansas City area. The Assistant Vice Chancellor represents the University with professional organizations at the local, regional, and national levels and ensures KU involvement in the higher education professional and continuing education community.
The Assistant Vice Chancellor will possess the following required qualifications:
An earned graduate degree from an accredited institution at the master’s level
History of visionary leadership aimed at social, educational and technological trends, and return on investment in professional and continuing education programs.
Demonstrated achievement in leadership and management of human resources, financial management, strategic planning and working within the complexities of a major university.
Demonstrated business acumen
Experience in educational methods particularly suited to working adults and professional audiences.
Demonstrated qualifications to lead the development of professional development and continuing education programs in an entrepreneurial environment for private and public sector organizations in a variety of formats (face to face, online, distance, etc.).
The Assistant Vice Chancellor may possess the following preferred qualifications;
An earned doctorate from an accredited institution
Demonstrated ability to lead the development of academic programs
Experience in research one institutions of higher education
This is a 100% FTE 12-month appointment and reports to the Vice Chancellor of the Edwards Campus. Salary is competitive with university peers. All major administrators at KU serve at the pleasure of the administrator to whom they report. The expectation is that the assistant vice chancellor of professional and continuing education will serve an initial term of five years with the possibility of continued appointment after that time.
