Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Marston Science Library. The successful candidate will be a forward thinking leader who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the changing nature of librarianship in the sciences. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources and Research Services, the Chair is a key member of the Libraries' management team, ensuring organizational effectiveness, efficiency, and development of policies for library operations. The Chair of the Marston Science Library is a tenure track faculty position which provides leadership for all aspects of the Marston Science Library services and operations including reference, instruction, circulation and outreach services; collection development; organization, maintenance, and preservation of collections; facilities management, staff management and supervision; and the collaborative development of digital library initiatives. In cooperation with the Science Collections Coordinator, the position also oversees a materials budget of over $1.5M for electronic resources, firm orders, and print serials, as well as additional funding from endowments and for multidisciplinary databases. The Chair collaborates with an innovative, entrepreneurial and team-oriented Science Library faculty and staff to assess strengths and weaknesses, to determine priorities, to establish policies, and to develop departmental service plans that enhance and support the academic mission of the University. The Chair works closely with the Associate Chair and shares the branch's responsibilities and supervisory duties. The Chair plays a key role in the evaluation of emerging library technologies and encourages student and faculty use of web-based and instructional technologies. The Chair serves as liaison for development opportunities relating to the department in both the public and private sectors and plays a major role in publicizing and expanding awareness and use of the library's resources, locally and nationally. The Chair serves on appropriate University and Library committees and pursues scholarly activities in areas of specialization. To support all students and faculty and foster excellence in a diverse and global society, the Chair of the Marston Science Library will be expected to include individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in work activities. RESPONSIBILITIES Branch Management * Works with departmental faculty and staff, including the Associate Chair, to define needs, set priorities, develop policies, and establish goals, objectives, strategic plans, and budgets to ensure effective management and development of the services and collections. * Oversees and coordinates the work of 9 librarians and 11 paraprofessionals. * Keeps abreast of national developments in the administration of academic research services, especially in the areas served by the Marston Science Library. * Oversees departmental initiatives in cooperation with assigned coordinators for research services, advanced reference services, bibliographic instruction, and public programs and exhibits. * Analyzes departmental programs; reports on accomplishments, creates strategies for improvements in quality of services and defines resource needs. * Fosters an atmosphere of collegiality and innovation. Plays a strong role in maintaining effective communication within and beyond the department, and promotes and sustains effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment. * Fosters a team-oriented work environment, encouraging personnel to work within and across departments in the University Libraries to support the goals and initiatives of the Libraries' strategic plan. * Organizes and maintains a systematic program of regular contact with appropriate academic and library faculty. Keeps informed on the development of academic programs to ensure that the department's collections, public service, and development programs support University curriculum and research needs. * Plays a key role in promoting instructional services to campus constituencies and encouraging the integration of library resources and research skills into the academic curriculum. * Serves as head of the Marston Science Library tenure and promotion home. Collaboration within the University Libraries * Works with departmental staff to identify and prioritize areas for which external support is needed; works closely with the Libraries' Development Office (Development Officers and Public Information Officer) to organize fundraising and donor relations activities; provides liaison assistance with the identification, cultivation and solicitation of potential donors; coordinates departmental participation in library development efforts. * Collaborates closely with internal library partners such as the Health Science Center Libraries, the Digital Library Services and other departments, branches and collections on opportunities of shared interest and mutual benefit. Other Professional Responsibilities * Conducts library and subject area research. * Participates in the cooperative management of the Libraries through service on the Library Council (library deans/administration and the chairs of departments), and other library consultative bodies. Participates in University of Florida committees as appropriate. * Represents the library in appropriate university, local, state, regional, and national bodies.
Minimum Requirements: Required: * ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. * Appointment at the Associate University Librarian rank requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, including 3 years of relevant managerial experience. * Appointment at the University Librarian rank requires a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience, including 5 years of relevant managerial experience. * Experience in effective planning and budgeting. * Experience in developing and evaluating library services for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or health disciplines. * Demonstrated success in human resource management and supervision, including the ability to lead and engage staff through the process of organizational improvement and change. * Knowledge of current trends in academic and scholarly resource management. * Broad understanding of current and emerging information technologies and patron services in academic libraries. * Experience in team-oriented project management. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. * Commitment to staff development and cross-department collaboration and communication. * Accomplishments in relevant scholarship and service. * Strong potential for meeting the requirements of tenure and promotion (outlined at http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/pers/cdh)
Preferred Qualifications: * Master's degree or Ph.D. in a sciences field. * Demonstrated record of leadership and achievement in librarianship, including mentoring, scholarly work, and professional/institutional service. * Proven success with fundraising and grants development and management. * Successful grant writing experience. * Knowledge of digitization practices and technology applications. * Record of including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in research, teaching, service and other work.
