MarComm creates a clear and consistent brand message, building visibility both nationally and internationally, as well as in the community and region. Job Summary:
The new External Communications Specialist will be responsible for supporting a marketing vision for the organization under the direction of the Senior Director, Communications. He/she will employ strategic communications tools through traditional and electronic platforms to effectively engage the media. This position is responsible for establishing a positive institutional image – proactively and reactively that will support both the central Division (MarComm) as well as the different departments and schools at DU, emphasizing its focus schools and prioritizing and aligning resources accordingly.

The key deliverable from the Division of Marketing and Communications is successful strategic, brand focused marketing communications.
The external communication specialist position is responsible for supporting the Division of Marketing & Communications as it grows the reputation of the University of Denver locally, nationally and internationally. The successful candidate must employ strategic communications tools through traditional and electronic platforms to effectively engage the media. Specific duties are as follows:
-Assists in writing, editing, and proofreading copy.
-Manages “beats”at the University, mining those areas for stories for University publications and media pitching opportunities.
-Utilizes news monitoring services for the purpose of tracking, compiling and distributing analysis and media reports.
-The Specialist will act as the producer for University video projects. This will include video field production, scriptwriting, voice-over, logging of tape, maintaining production schedules and calendars.
-Maintains an updated and accurate database of contact information for media representatives, for use by the department.
-Assists with the production and distribution of media kits and other related materials to registered media representatives, spokespersons, and press briefings.
-Provides logistical and on-site support of media events.
-Conducts research and assists in drafting press releases, media advisories and other press materials.
-Manages media inquiries and requests for interviews.
-Assumes other duties and responsibilities necessary to support the activities of the department, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Excellent communicator with experience working with the news media.
-Scriptwriting and copywriting experience.
-Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
-Some crisis management experience including media interview training is desirable.
-Team player.
Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or related field.
-Minimum 2-3 years relevant experience in journalism, public relations, and/or communications.
-Ability to log, edit and produce video.
-Some evening and weekend assignments and/or travel may be required.
