The new Division of Marketing & Communications (MarComm), focuses on leveraging DU’s uniqueness and strengths to create a relevant and compelling positioning/value proposition. MarComm creates a clear and consistent brand message, building visibility both nationally and internationally, as well as in the community and region. Our key focus is driving awareness of DU and what it has to offer by employing marketing and branding initiatives to facilitate growth.

Job Summary:

The new External Communications Manager will be responsible for supporting a marketing vision for the organization under the direction of the Senior Director, Communications. He/she will develop and implement a best in class actionable media relations programs and outreach programs that will support both the central Division (MarComm) but also across the different departments and schools at DU, emphasizing its focus schools and prioritizing and aligning resources accordingly.

The key deliverable from the Division of Marketing and Communications is successful strategic, brand focused marketing communications.

The External Communications Manager promotes the University of Denver and its brand through actionable media relations programs and outreach programs. The person in this position will build the institution’s reputation through proactive and reactive media relations and public affairs efforts including: serving as a spokesperson; building and enhancing relationships with other key reporters and newsroom leaders; developing and placing news stories aligned with University priorities; maintaining the department’s editorial calendar and media lists; producing materials for distribution to the media, such as press releases, fact sheets and social media; and tracking and compiling media coverage. The External Communications Manager will develop comprehensive communication plans and support tactical execution. The successful candidate will employ strategic communications tools through traditional and electronic platforms to effectively engage the media and other stakeholder audiences. This position also serves as a member of the University’s emergency communication team. Specific duties are as follows:
-Assists in writing, editing, and proofreading copy.
-Manages “beats” at the University, mining those areas for stories for University publications and media pitching opportunities.
-Utilizes news monitoring services for the purpose of tracking, compiling and distributing analysis and media reports.
-Maintains an updated and accurate database of contact information for media representatives, for use by the department.
-Assists with the production and distribution of media kits and other related materials to registered media representatives, spokespersons, and press briefings.
-Provides logistical and on-site support of media events.
-Conducts research and assists in drafting press releases, media advisories and other press materials.
-Manages media inquiries and requests for interviews.
-Assumes other duties and responsibilities necessary to support the activities of the department, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

-5-7 years relevant experience in journalism, public relations, and/or corporate communications, preferably in a global environment.
-Significant experience in media relations and issues management, spokesperson training, strategic marketing alliances, special events, etc., plus strong journalistic writing skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field.
-5 years relevant experience in journalism, public relations, and/or corporate communications, preferably in a global environment.
-Strong verbal and outstanding written communication skills, including the ability to communicate concisely and draft documents such as press releases, web content, position papers, speeches and briefings.
-Team-oriented and able to interact effectively and influence peers and all levels of management.
-Extremely strong interpersonal skills including good judgment, maturity, creativity, and a high energy level.
-Success representing public relations on cross-functional teams developing strategies and tactics for integrated marketing and comms plans.
-Demonstrated ability to create and execute strategic communication plans.
-Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment managing multiple projects and assignments simultaneously.
-Some crisis management experience including media interview training.
