NATURE OF THE JOB
Under direction of the Application Technology Transfer Laboratory leadership and project schedules, prioritize and execute various technical tasks with minimal supervision either independently or by leading a small team of other technicians. Manage one or more of the work centers (e.g., ply cutting, layup, tool preparation, infusion, machining, and post-molding operations). Working with ATTL leadership, take initiative in improving overall safety, quality, and productivity. This position is primarily hands-on at a high skill level, but also requires the ability to supervise others during the execution of tasks on the shop floor.
• Fabricate composite components, structures, and test articles using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and other processes. Specific tasks include tool preparation, fabric cutting, layup, vacuum bagging, resin mixing, infusion, and post-molding operations.
• Supervise execution of work, provide technical leadership, and manage equipment and supplies in one or more of ATTL’s work centers listed above.
• Record manufacturing process data and test data according to written instructions.
• Work with engineers to generate processing and testing documents for ATTL shop floor procedures.
• Troubleshoot equipment and manufacturing processes.
• Maintain manufacturing and testing equipment.
• Prepare composite samples for mechanical testing (including machining, end-tabbing, and strain-gaging) and perform mechanical testing of composite coupons, subcomponents, and full-scale structures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED supplemented with relevant technical training or hands-on manufacturing experience.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience demonstrating technical, communication, and leadership skills plus a commitment to safety and quality.
• Skill with hand tools and woodworking machine tools. Experience with machine shop tools (mill, lathe) is a plus.
• Ability to perform independent tasks as well as lead team efforts.
• Familiarity with the proper use of standard personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, respirators, etc.
• Basic computer skills with MS Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Permanent Resident or US Citizen required due to funding source of position.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license. Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment. Permanent resident or US Citizen required due to funding source.
Frequently required to use personal protective equipment (including safety glasses, gloves, and respirator) to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
