Posting Description: *Example of Work Performed:* * Administer the student laboratory computers including associated servers, which involves implementation of regular backups and disaster recovery, regular security/firmware updates and testing, user account support, management of LAMP based websites and sftp sites and access, task automation, SAN administration, system hardening and firewall/IDS configuration/administration, and administration of various file and print servers. * Design and implementation of network structures and topologies, coordinating with ITS for network support and access while managing the department's subnets, maintaining DNS records and lab DHCP services, as well as maintenance of the iSCSI SAN backbone and VMware servers. * Purchase computer and networking hardware and software for the student labs, server room, and provide recommendations to faculty and staff regarding hardware and software purchases and the overall direction of the Department in the technical field. * Supervise the System and Network Administration Services (SNAS) team, which may consist of student administrators, assistant administrators and/or lab monitors. * Manage server room facilities including environmental monitoring/alerting and basic Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) unit support. * Act as a liaison to UCD ITS and act as a central point of contact for departmental requests for facilities management, teaching lab reservations and configuration and service requests. * Document both the present status and changes made to the lab including router/server configurations and layout, network topology, and software and configuration issues that have arisen with their associated solutions. * Provide daily-unscheduled technical support for faculty, staff, and students and tailor specific solutions or applications to fit the situation. * Position will often need to lift/handle computing equipment such as desktops, servers, printers, etc. and carry them over and place them on top of tables/desks. Position will also be required to access the server room on a regular basis, including reaching high up on the server racks, typically requiring the use of a ladder.
Minimum Qualifications: *MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS* * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related information technology field with at least three years of experience managing technology or technology resources. A combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis. * Experience administering Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and VMware vSphere systems. * Experience with Apache HTTP Server, PHP, MySQL, network security/monitoring software, internet protocols and services. * Experience configuring networking hardware including firewalls, switches, and routers.
*Conditions of Employment* * Must be willing and able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. * Must be willing and able to climb a ladder.
Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: *KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:* * Expert level knowledge with Systems Administration duties such as disk storage management, memory, hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting as well as network attached storage environments. * Knowledge with OS and network security (firewalls, IDS's and system hardening) * Knowledge of networking concepts, practices, and configurations. * Provide documentation and training related to new system implementations to Department members. * Assist in creating internal systems administration best practices, standards and documentation. * Provide assistance to the Department faculty and staff on projects including all integration related work. * Ability to work independently to get the job done with little or no assistance. * Ability to work closely with end users and understand their needs and requirements. * Strong organizational skills with high attention to details. * Strong communication and customer service skills. * Capable of taking a lead in projects with technical and non-technical customers. * Coaching and Mentorship experience for junior members.
Desired Qualifications: *PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:* * CCNA or equivalent network certification. * Experience architecting SAN (iSCSI) and NAS (NFS/CIFS) systems including tape backup disaster recovery systems. * Advanced experience with performance tuning, package installation, patch management updates, network and server management issues with CentOS (RHEL) and FreeBSD servers. * Experience with APC InfraStruxure environmental equipment and software. * Experience and knowledge of HPC and HTC software and configuration. * Experience and knowledge of datacenter design best practices, cabling standards, and power/cooling management.
