Posting Description: This position will be responsible for a variety of day-to-day tasks including moves, adds and changes of any network connection (wired or wireless); implementation, organization and identification, analysis, and problem solving associated with any network connections; installation, configuring and maintaining of network monitoring hardware and software; manages and installs network equipment, switches, and routers; and analyzes traffic and suggests improvements.
The Core Engineer may be called into the field to work with customers on connectivity issues (Routing, VPN, wireless, or workstation issues) as well as to expand the IT closet with additional switches or build out a new closet or retrofit an existing closet. This person may be asked to graph an interface and analyze traffic flows, watch for dropped packets or other errors, and make recommendations to leadership with a plan to eliminate the problem. This person will take customer calls transferred from the Help Desk and work one-on-one with the customer which requires the people skills to appropriately handle the call. Customers may call as they can't access a particular web site or a particular serve or network service is slow, the Core Engineer will investigate the issues. The Core Engineer may be asked to investigate 3rd party products such as switches, routers, PoE solutions, UPS needs, VoIP, IPv6, FCOE, VPN and wireless solutions, software such as Network Admission Control, QoS, multicasting, video conferencing needs and network management tools. This position will submit reports such as monthly matrix and trending information as well as work load analysis reports. Documentation and reviewing and analyzing pertinent logs is key whether it be network drawings, data center design, charts and graphs, Pinnacle updates, or simply tagging a jack or a circuit with the right information.
Responsibilities may include: *Delivery of tasks in accordance with accepted project plans *Communicates with other departments to report and resolve software, hardware, and operations problems *Establishes and maintains network users, user environment, access lists, and security *Responsible for remote office support *Responsible for support of remote users *Works with IT Group to design and implement network topologies *Maintains circuit documentation *Data networking layer 2 and layer 3 support *Understanding of LAN and WAN environment, which includes basic Routing and Switching topologies, Wireless (802.1n, a, g, ac), VPNs (IPsec, SSL and others), Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet, Serial (PPP and HDLC) and Frame Relay *Strong analysis and problem solving skills and IP packet analysis *Escalates issues to vendors and management *Takes a proactive approach to mentoring other staff members *Understanding IGP routing protocols such us OSPF, ISIS and EIGRP *Special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and at least two years of hands on network experience.
Substitution: A combination of work experience in the occupational field or specialized subject area of the work assigned to the job, which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree.

Desired Qualifications: *Cisco certification(s) *Large Cisco network switching and routing experience *Experience with data center switches and environment (such us Nexus 7000 and 5000) *Knowledge of and experience with VPN and wireless networking *Solid background with SSL and IPSec VPNs *Three years of professional experience working in an enterprise class higher education environment
