About The Unit: The Center on Human Flourishing was developed at the University of Chicago in 2013 to support basic empirical research in economics, in collaboration with other disciplines, directed toward promoting human development through early childhood investments, as well as across the lifecycle. A core goal is to train students and acquaint the wider world with the wealth of applied research activities being conducted at the University of Chicago.
Unit Job Summary: Reporting to the Associate Director, the Human Resources Generalist 2 will manage the human resources functions of the Center on Human Flourishing. The Center has over 40 staff and affiliates. Human resources functions include: developing job descriptions; recruitment of applicants; interviewing and reference checking ; managing on- and off-boarding, including conducting an orientation to the Center for new employees, volunteers and visitors; overseeing space and equipment allocations to ensure employees can meet Center's goals; ensuring proper payroll allocations and amounts; reviewing (and when applicable, submitting) timecards ; tracking and assisting with performance evaluations of research and administrative staff, including research and execution of performance development tools; handling internal mass communications to the Center as needed; developing and maintaining the Center's regularly changing organizational chart ; growing a culture and practice of teamwork, maintaining high morale within the Center, and supporting the goal of employee retention . On-boarding will include developing and processing payroll or appointment paperwork, including working with the Office of International Affairs on immigration matters, as well as keeping current the "team" section of the Center's website. S/he will also ensure adequate staffing to meet Center's goals, especially during key times.
An important part of the position is to maintain appropriate human resources data and records. The Generalist will develop regular reports for Associate Director, including: preparing charts, graphs, and trend lines; equity of employee compensation; interviewing protocols, selection criteria, and training for new hires; draft or recommend changes to Center policies and procedures . May develop and administer an HR budget, monitor for variances, and manage employment expenses within established guidelines. Will liaison with appropriate local and central Human Resources staff across multiple organizations for direction on special circumstances, to ensure correct administrative processes are followed, and to field or direct questions from Center staff regarding benefits . May supervise staff members of an assigned team. May also participate in and assist with other administrative processes of the Center to allow for an overall picture of the administrative operations of the Center, as well as for cross-training should other administrators be out of the office. Additional duties may be assigned.
Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) certification preferred.
Unit Experience: A minimum of five years experience in management, human resources, or operations required.
Experience working successfully in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated organization and coordination skills required.
Experience in a higher education environment preferred.
