School of Medicine
Department of Surgery
Beckman Laser Institute
Position: Postdoctoral Scholars
The School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Beckman Laser Institute, located at the University of California, Irvine, is anticipating openings for Postdoctoral Scholars to work with:
Brian Wong, MD, Ph.D. &
Zhongping Chen, Ph.D.,
Seek a post-doctoral fellow to work on visualization, segmentation, and analysis of images generated using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The Beckman Laser Institute is a multi-disciplinary research center at UC Irvine with a strong focus on optical imaging of organs and tissues. The candidate should have a background on Electrical or Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science, with expertise in Visualization, rendering, segmentation, shape representation and shape statistics. Contact information for three referees will be required. A publication record in this area is absolutely necessary. The fellow will work under the supervision of Professors Wong and Chen but will also be required to be highly independent. He/she will join a team including physicists, electrical engineers, biomedical engineering, clinical fellows, and head and neck surgeons. The focus of the research is in the upper airway.
The focus will be evaluating 3D OCT images and segmenting and analyzing relevant structures. Images will also vary in time. OCT is a low-contrast imaging modality, albeit high resolution. Some experience with MatLab, Mimics and 3D Slicer is preferred. PhD Level is an absolute requirement. Preference is given to US University graduates. Send inquiries to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Michael Berns, Ph.D.,
Periodically seeks applicants with an expertise for the design and construction of novel new laser-based optical microscopes. Applicants should have proven experience in the application of these new technologies, which are focused around photonics and laser interactions in a focused microscope spot. Candidate must be able to provide physics and optics expertise and at the same time, work specifically to integrate various new optical technologies into current systems. Experience in molecular biology and cell culture is also desirable.
Seeks applicants for a position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute and collaborates with the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Irvine. Research areas that are of particular interests include the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT), multiphoton and nonlinear optical microendoscopy, and photoacoustic tomography for imaging tissue structure and physiology.
Seeks applicants with an interest in translational optical imaging. Responsibilities include collection and analysis of Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging data from in both preclinical and clinical settings as well as instrument design and assembly. Experience in biophotonics and tissue optics is required. Experience with LabView and MATLAB programming is desirable. In addition, candidate should have experience assembling instrumentation. Professional communication skills, both written and oral, are a must, as is a willingness to help manage projects. Candidates for post-doctoral employment must have a Ph.D. Candidates must have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting. Applicants should send a CV and the names of three references to email@example.com, http://durkin.bli.uci.edu/. All appointments are for one year with the potential for extension dependent upon performance and funding.
Seeks applicants with an interest in using and developing remote optical and thermal sensing techniques to study the effects of laser interaction with biological tissues in general and human skin in particular. Such techniques are based on pulsed photothermal radiometry, infrared tomography and optical coherence tomography. Experience in applied laser biology is desirable.
Is recruiting for a training fellowship in Biomedical Optics Medical Device Development for Cancer Detection. Responsibilities include developing non-invasive optical devices for research and clinical studies in breast cancer. We seek individuals with expertise in optical technologies using semiconductor lasers, optical fibers, computers, and solid-state detectors. Knowledge of electronics, rf techniques, and software control of instrumentation is desirable. Candidates for this position should hold a Ph.D. and should have less than five years of postdoctoral training. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
|Seeks a post-doctoral fellow with a background in mechanical analysis of cartilage or in physical chemistry. The position will focus on the analysis of cartilage shape change following the creating of electrochemical changes in the tissue matrix. The Beckman Laser Institute is a multi-disciplinary research center at UC Irvine with a strong focus on optical imaging of organs and tissues. The candidate should have a background in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry. This skill set is eclectic and broad. Knowledge of mechanical analysis of biologic tissues and physical chemistry is desired. The ideal candidate understand both cartilage biomechanics (indentation testing, etc.) and electrochemistry (e.g. fuel cell technology) in detail; this is not an absolute requirement. Expertise with finite element methods would also be desirable. The long-term focus is on the development of surgical technology. Contact information for three referees will be required. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong publication record, and a record of transdisciplinary research.
The fellow will work under the supervision of Brian Wong, M.D., Ph.D., but will also be required to be highly independent. He/she will join a team including physicists, electrical engineers, biomedical engineering, clinical fellows, and head and neck surgeons. Current team numbers approximately 20 members. The focus of the research is on development technology to reshape facial cartilages.
Some experience with COMSOL and MatLab is preferred. PhD Level is an absolute requirement. Preference is given to US University graduates. Send inquiries firstname.lastname@example.org.
REQUIREMENTS: Candidates should have a PhD in engineering (ideally electrical or optical) for the post-doctoral fellow position. Communication and writing skills are paramount. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting, and familiarity with biomedical optics concepts is desired.
TO APPLY: All applicants should send a CV and the names of three references to:
