Under the supervision of the director, incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the classroom. The lead teacher shares responsibility for establishing an effective environment for the children. The teacher is knowledgeable of the Center'
s philosophy, policies, goals, and objectives. Duties include: planning and supervising the classroom activities and providing an environment for 2 1/2 to 5 year old children that promote safe, healthy and free exploration. The lead teacher is responsible for providing an environment where the children feel safe and comfortable.
Salary: Hourly $20.92
Work Schedule: 7:30-6, M-F hours varies
Valid Child Development Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education or an equivalent combination of education and minimum of 3 years experience working with children 2 1/2 to 5 in a classroom setting as a master teacher. Ability to work effectively as a member of a child development team, with children, parents, staff members, and community representatives in providing a quality educational program. Thorough understanding of child development and the philosophy and methodology of early childhood education, as well as changes taking place in the field. Ability to work with and be sensitive to a culturally diverse community. Ability to relate to children as individuals and in small and large groups.
Ability to plan, organize, and directs a challenging developmental and instructional program for preschool age children.
Familiarity with federal and state health safety regulations applicable to a child care facility. Knowledgeable of NAEYC Accreditation Criteria.

Percent of Time: 95%
Coordinates work with other team members to plan and develop the overall program and implement, on a daily basis, a curriculum for 2 1/2 to 5 year old children relevant to their needs, abilities and interests, and promote their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.
Plans, implements and supervises age-appropriate activities in the following curriculum areas: art, language, cognitive development, physical development, science, nutrition, music, social development, emotional development, dramatic play and multi-cultural awareness.
Ensures that individual learning experiences and the total curriculum are congruent with the state regulations and the philosophy and goals of the Center.
Creates and maintains an emotional climate that is accepting. Acknowledges and respects the integrity of each individual child and encourages the development of a positive self-image to allow the child to comfortably and successfully explore and learn.
Prepares materials to support and enhance specific curriculum themes and activities in the classroom.
Assists children in acquiring and gaining confidence with basic self help skills.
Plans off-campus experiences to enhance a child s interaction with the world. Informs parents and acquires written permission. Supervises meal and snack supplements.
Examines each child s enrollment materials in preparation for the child s entrance and transition in to the program. Reviews development and health history to prepare for a smooth transition and open communication between the school and the family. Knows each child s dietary and medical restrictions, posts them and ensures that they are observed. Prepares required lesson plans.
Observes and analysis each child s progress quarterly, documents and changes and/or situations that warrant specific observation and/or intervention. Consults with Director and advises team members. Involves and informs parents when deemed appropriate.
Facilities with Director s assistance, referrals when necessary. Applies discipline in a positive, non-judgmental manner that sets clear and appropriate limits. Assists the child in accepting responsibility for his/her behavior and is sensitive to each child's needs.
Encourages each child s individuality and independence. Assists children in gaining the skills for understanding and expressing their wants and needs, and to resolve their conflicts.
Maintains open communication and rapport with parents. Schedules regular parent teacher conferences and home visits. Provides opportunity for and encourages informal dialogue.
Assists Director in promoting an ongoing parent participation program. Encourages involvement and supports the activities of the Parent Advisory Board. Is alert, sensitive and responsive to parent concerns.
Keeps parents informed of policies and procedures, upcoming activities, current issues, and information in the form of announcements, reminders, article reprints, newsletters and parent education meetings and workshops.
In conjunction with the Director, conducts parent orientation to familiarize parents with the goals, philosophy and day-to-day operation of the Center.
Provides training, guidance and direction to teachers, aides, substitutes, volunteers, field study and practicum students.
Plans and presents orientation sessions, conducts regular staff meetings and in-service training for volunteers, support staff and field study students.
Assists Director in selecting and evaluating teachers and teaching assistants.
Welcomes, informs, and conducts tours to Center visitors and required.
Assists Director in preparation of the annual budget. Keeps apprised of budget status, requirements and limitations.
Documents accurate attendance records, correspondence, home visit reports, child observation notes, lesson plans, accident reports and assessment.
Responsible for opening/closing Center on a daily basis, depending on work shift.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Ensures that all equipment is appropriate for preschool aged children, properly installed, well maintained and that the use of equipment in play sufficiently supervised.
Conducts morning health checks, documents and informs parent of accidents, takes appropriate steps to isolate children who become ill while at the Center and makes proper notification of exposure to contagious illness.
Ensures that the physical plant is well maintained. Is alert to and removes hazards to health and/or safety and notifies proper authorities when necessary.
Designates appropriate storage space for indoor and outdoor supplies and equipment. Oversees clean up of classroom, yard and equipment.
Follows basic health and safety rules posted in classroom. Assists children in understanding and observing rules. Encourages good health and nutritional habits.
Knows procedures for responding to a variety of emergencies. Conducts frequent drills to train staff and children. Supervises clearing of building in case of fire or other emergency. Initiates procedures in the event of illness or emergency.
Maintains first aid kit and supplies.
Administer medication and treatment as authorized by or prescribed by a licensed physician.
Attends regularly scheduled Child Care Services staff meetings.
Promotes a constructive working relationship with the team through positive resolution, direct and complete communication, and group problem solving.
Is current on new developments in childcare and information on child development and curriculum planning.

The lead teacher performs other duties and special projects as requested by director.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
A minimum of 3 years current experience as a teacher working in a center environment.
Ability to work effectively with adults, teachers, student staff, parents and director.
