The Center´s goal is to develop and promote operational and policy responses to protect and strengthen the livelihoods of people living in crisis effected and marginalized communities, impacted by violence, malnutrition or loss of assets. We work globally to understand the causes and effects of marginalization, famine, conflict, and forced displacement and with national and international organizations to bring about institutional changes that enhance effective policy reform and promote best practice.

ENGINE (Empowering New Generations to Improve Nutrition and Economic opportunities) is a 5 year, USD 50 million USAID funded project in Ethiopia that aims to strengthen nutrition sensitive programming across national, regional and local level programs and policies at the health facilities and community levels. Save the Children USA are leading the project with partners Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins University Center for Communications Programs (CCP), Land O'Lakes Inc., Tufts University and Valid International. The vision under the ENGINE partnership is that Ethiopian women and children less than 5 years old achieve sustainable improvements in their nutritional status, which enable them to lead healthier and more productive lives. To reach the strategic objective of improved nutritional status of women and young children through sustainable, comprehensive, coordinated, and evidence-based interventions, the program aims to achieve four intermediate results (IR). The last of these (IR4) is about implementing a rigorous and innovative learning agenda. Tufts University have remit to lead and achieve this result in partnership with others.

Reporting to the project Director, the Sr. Researcher will oversee all ENGINE work under Tuft's remit in Ethiopia for achievement of project objectives. This position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Sr. Researcher will:

  • Travel to all project sites in Ethiopia;
  • Work closely with both the team of researchers on the project (particularly the Center Director to whom this position will report and Co-PIs) and the center's administration support team.

Job Description - Requirements :

Basic Requirements: Masters' degree or higher in a nutrition related subject that has included considerable focus on nutritional issues in the developing world. Must have 5+ years experience of managing nutrition (or related) projects in the developing world. This includes 2+ years' experience of overseeing research projects in the developing world. Microsoft Office Suite with appropriate research skills including use of bibliographic software. Excellent English writing and verbal communication skills, coordination and organizational skills. Good knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods, including some knowledge of common data analysis software such as SPSS. Some experience in leading training and/or teaching in a nutrition or related subject. Ability to relate effectively to people across national and cultural boundaries. Ability to lift 20 lbs with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD in a nutrition related subject. Experience of working in Ethiopia on research/development projects. Knowledge of the Amharic language. A desire to work as a member of a team of academics and practitioners which embraces multidisciplinary approaches and methods.

Special Work Schedule Requirements: This position will involve considerable field work in Ethiopia which will require considerable flexibility in working schedule. This project may also involve participation in workshops and administration outside normal working hours. This position is grant funded as well as limited appointment .The funding for this position is for a one year period with the probability of an extension up to five years.
