Temple University's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, which is one of the most respected in the country and ranked among the Top 40 graduate programs, invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The College of Health Professions and Social Work has experienced significant academic expansion through increased research and scholarly endeavors, rising enrollment and the addition of distinguished researchers and educators. As one of 17 schools within the University, the College of Health Professions and Social Work has the third largest research portfolio, over 4,000 students and 135 full-time faculty members. Four of the graduate programs in the College have been ranked among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, including Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Public Health. The College is located on Temple's Main Campus and the Health Sciences Center Campus, and is minutes from the culturally vibrant center of Philadelphia. The city is well known for world class academic healthcare systems, professional services, higher education and possessing diverse and very accessible urban and suburban communities. Philadelphia is strategically located in the center of the Mid-Atlantic corridor, between New York and Washington, D.C.
The Department has 16 full-time faculty members, 11 adjunct professors and grants Bachelor's degrees in Speech-Language-Hearing and Linguistics, a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders. There is a Speech, Language and Hearing Center on Temple's Main Campus, and four established research programs - the Bilingual Research Laboratory, the Mentored Literacy Project, and two programs that comprise the Eleanor M. Saffran Center for Cognitive Neuroscience: the Cognitive Neurophysiology Laboratory and the Aphasia Rehabilitation Research Center. The Department has an exemplary track record of educating first-rate clinical professionals and researchers.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Health Professions and Social Work, the Chair will build upon the Department's success by maintaining and enhancing outstanding academic and clinical programs, supporting the commitment of clinical and educational services to the community, expanding the Ph.D. program and leading the Department to new levels of excellence in achieving its research, scholarship and academic goals. The Chair will encourage inter-disciplinary work. This individual will provide leadership and vision to the faculty and staff, manage the strategic planning process and bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the Department.
Applicants must possess a proven track record of leadership, experience with grant writing and securing external funding, strong interpersonal skills and commitment to creating a collaborative work environment that is entrepreneurial and encourages a team spirit. The ideal candidate will be expected to have an established program of research. Areas of expertise may include but are not limited to language and literacy development in bilingual children, voice disorders, motor speech disorders, autism, phonological development, aphasia and related disorders, pediatric and adult neuropsychology and psycho-linguistics.
The Chair will possess an earned Doctorate from one of the following fields of study dealing with Communication Sciences and Disorders such as: Speech-Language Pathology, Linguistics, Psychology - Cognitive Sciences, Psychology - Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, Biomedical Engineering or Neurology; a record of scholarship; and experience with university administration which may include Associate Chair, Center Director or leadership roles on key committees.
