Founded in 1893 as New Haven Normal School, the University has evolved to its current-day status as a modern, diversified center of higher learning with both undergraduate and graduate programs. One of four comprehensive universities in the 17-member Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, the cornerstones of its mission are excellence, social justice, access, and engagement.
Southern’s five schools – the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Health and Human Services, and the School of Graduate Studies – offer more than 100 degree programs. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are awarded, as well as sixth-year professional diplomas and doctoral degrees in educational leadership and nursing education. Complementing the schools are a fine library and several nationally-recognized centers of excellence. In addition to traditional in-class pedagogy, Southern offers a broad array of online courses and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Southern’s 11,000 diverse students are taught and mentored by more than 430 talented full-time faculty members, 82 percent of whom hold the doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in their field. A strong cadre of part-time faculty members, some of whom are practitioners in their fields, adds a breadth of experiences to the classroom.
The VPFA reports directly to the President and is a key member of the University Cabinet. The VPFA oversees a broad portfolio including administrative support services, the controller, capital budgeting and facilities operations, financial aid and scholarships, and the University police. Within the VPFA’s division are a full- and part-time staff of 217.
Experience serving in a public educational setting and within a system will be beneficial as will work with long-range strategic planning and implementation, cash and endowment management, facilities planning and project execution, budgeting, enrollment management and partnership building. Southern also seeks VPFA candidates with leadership and relational attributes that inspire confidence, foster trust, and draw on the potential of others.
