Smith College invites applications for the position of Dean of the Ada Comstock Scholars (non-traditional students) and Sophomores. Founded in 1875, Smith is the largest undergraduate women’s college in the United States. The Class Deans Office serves as a nexus for students and faculty around all issues in a student’s academic life from choosing majors and plans for international to failing courses or academic dishonesty. Class Deans work closely with students, faculty, advisers and other stake holders across campus –Student Affairs, Health and Counseling Services, Disability Services, etc. – in order to ensure student success in a liberal arts residential college setting.
The Dean is primarily responsible for monitoring the academic progress and welfare of students. As Dean of the Ada Comstock Scholars the dean must also be sensitive and responsive to students’ needs across a wide range of ages and family situations. Responsibilities: provide academic advice to students about curricular requirements, course selection and degree progress; work closely with fellow class deans, faculty and administration on student academic matters; consult and coordinate with offices across the campus (International Study, Residence Life, Jacobson Center for Teaching and Learning, Spinelli Center for Quantitative Skills, Counseling and Health Services, etc.); organize transfer student advising; supervise an administrative assistant.
Qualifications: Master’s degree plus a minimum of five years of teaching/administrative experience; Ph.D. preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be a strong speaker, an engaged and empathetic listener; possess superb organizational skills and have experience working with students, faculty, parents and staff. The successful candidate will be committed to student success in the context of a rigorous academic program and be committed to women’s education, cultural diversity, and liberal arts education in a residential environment.
