Voyage: 2015 Fall

General Responsibilities: The Physician plans, coordinates, and evaluates total patient care for voyage participants.

Specifically, the position:

-Together with the Medical Team, provides a daily clinic(s) for participants

-Serves on a rotating on-call for situations that need attention

-Participates as a member of the shipboard emergency response team

-Makes educational presentations to participants regarding in-country health issues

-Supervises the Nurse/Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant and Psychologists

-Works collaboratively with ship medical personnel (physician and two nurses)

-Reports to the Executive Dean and is the leader of the Medical Team

-Prior to voyage departure, participates in a training session via conference call

Minimum Qualifications: M.D. currently licensed to practice medicine in the U.S.

10+ years of full-time medical experience in college student health, family practice, or similar field (e.g. emergency medicine or internal medicine).

Previous emergency service preferred

Wide range of diagnostic and treatment experience

Ability to perform minor emergency service

Experience in intravenous line placement

Competent skill level in basic life support, advanced life support, intubation, and cardiac care

Knowledge of tropical medicine related issues is desirable

Board certification in specialty and ACLS required

Note: As an independent contractor, the physician must provide their own malpractice insurance or meet eligibility requirements for SAS's medical malpractice policy.

Flexibility and a mindset of getting things done essential

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the capacity to relate effectively with Program constituents

Must be detail-oriented, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a complex and dynamic environment

Ability to exercise good judgment on a range of issues

Ability to handle emergencies
