Voyage: 2015 Fall
General Responsibilities: The Photographer position is for a photojournalist, multimedia expert, and social media enthusiast who will be part of the on- board communications team that documents a Semester at Sea voyage and achieves strategic marketing and communications goals as directed by the Institute for Shipboard Education. In conjunction with the Communications Coordinator and Videographer, the Photographer works collaboratively with voyage participants, faculty, staff, and host nationals to create and maintain shareable media for the News from The Helm blog through daily posts, articles, photo essays, participant profiles, slideshows, videos, podcasts, PR communications, and social media updates in support of the SAS/ ISE mission. Note: Educational content and academic highlights are the most important shipboard elements to capture and disseminate. Duties of the Photographer include digitally documenting the voyage for archival and marketing purposes, creating photo essays, photo galleries, and multimedia videos for the SAS website, and contributing to our social media presence through photographs. -The Photographer reports to the Communications Coordinator and is a member of the Support Services team. -This position works collaboratively with the ISE communications team in Charlottesville, Va. -Prior to departure, the Photographer participates in regularly scheduled conference calls. Note: The photographer provides his or her own camera(s) and personal image archive/storage, at minimum equivalent of a Nikon D700/Canon T2i or better; many photographers have found a personal laptop valuable although a fully-equipped Mac workstation is provided.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of five years of professional photography experience, and proficiency with MAC operating systems required. Prior supervisory experience and international experience preferred. Be creative and pragmatic, remaining focused on creating deliverables that relate to our core audiences and reflect SAS/ISE's mission and brand story. Experience with travel photography and working with college-age students. Ability to create detailed media plans and execute according to tight deadlines. Analytical creative problem solver who can exercise sound judgment and make quick decisions. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to media and community requests. Ability to maximize the use of limited resources and communication with SAS/ISE home office. Must be proficient in digital photography, including image acquisition and image editing. Experienced in journalism and storytelling. Demonstrated experience with Adobe Photoshop and PhotoMechanic; Experienced in multimedia production using Final Cut Pro. Experienced in audio-editing software Audacity and Garage Band recording software. Commitment to the role of higher education in society, sensitivity to the mission of higher education and understanding of the culture of a shipboard nonprofit institution.
