Communications Coordinator
Voyage: 2015 Fall
General Responsibilities: The Communications Coordinator is an enthusiastic journalist, PR coordinator, and social media expert who leads the communications team to document the voyage and achieve strategic marketing and communication goals as directed by the Institute.
Position responsibilities include:
-In support of the SAS/ISE mission, creating and maintaining sharable media for the News from the Helm blog through daily
posts, articles, photo essays, participant profiles, slide-shows, videos, podcasts, PR communications, and social media updates
Note: academic highlights and educational content are the most important elements to capture and disseminate.
-Instituting a shipboard media relations program to increase SAS/ISE's visibility through local, regional, and national media
campaigns and establishing media contacts with students' home institutions and internationally in SAS ports of call.
-Being active on voyage-based social media channels throughout the voyage
-Being available to assist with key community outreach events (open ships, hosting dignitaries, special events) and crisis
communications when needed
-Reporting to the Assistant Executive Dean and being a member of the Support Services team
-Working collaboratively with the ISE communications team in Charlottesville, Va.
-Prior to departure, participating in regularly scheduled conference calls
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, English, marketing, communications or related field.
Preferred: Master's degree, prior supervisory experience, and
international experience
Have experience with travel writing, PR outreach, social media channels, and working with college-age students.
Be creative and pragmatic, remaining focused on creating
deliverables that relate to our core audiences and reflect SAS/ISE's mission and brand story.
Be an analytical creative problem solver who can exercise sound judgment and make quick decisions.
Create detailed media plans and execute according to deadlines.
Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to media and
community requests.
Contribute to the strategic planning efforts of SAS/ISE.
Maximize the use of limited resources and communication with
SAS/ISE home office.
Possess in-depth knowledge of word processing applications (MS Word and similar programs) and the WordPress blogging platform.
Have working knowledge of photographic principles and the
ability to size photos appropriately for inclusion in blog posts.
Have in-depth understanding and demonstrated use of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr.
-Be committed to the role of higher education in society, sensitive to the mission of higher education and
understanding of the culture of a shipboard nonprofit institution.
