Voyage: 2014 Fall

General Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean of Student Life works closely with the Dean of Student Life in collaborating with the deans and faculty to ensure student success and to manage student crises.

Specifically, the position:

-Administers the student code of conduct, to include:
--interpreting shipboard policies and procedures
--initiating & encouraging educational activities that serve to reduce code violations
--responding to student behavioral problems in a fair and reasonable manner
--providing learning experiences for students found responsible for code violations
--protecting the rights of students in the administration of the conduct code
--working closely with Psychologists to refer students for assessment services

-Manages student workers at the program desk

-Coordinates classroom space reservation process for non-class hours

-Assists the Dean of Student Life with duties as assigned

-Reports to Dean of Student Life and is a member of the Student Life team and the Administrative team

-Meets regularly by conference call with Administrative team and ISE leaders starting a year prior to voyage departure, including a planning meeting in Charlottesville four months before departure

-Serves on-call in port (24-hour coverage rotated among four senior administrators) for situations that need attention and crisis management

Minimum Qualifications: 8+ years of experience working with undergraduate students in residence life in a college or university

Master's degree in higher education and student affairs administration, or a related field

Demonstrated success in working with students and managing student crises and student conduct

Candidates who work primarily with student conduct administration preferred

Previous service as Semester at Sea staff preferred

An understanding of how to promote student learning and academic success

The ability to create an environment where students feel free to ask questions and obtain assistance

Flexibility and a mindset of getting things done essential

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the capacity to relate effectively with Program constituents

Must be detail-oriented, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a complex and dynamic environment

Ability to exercise good judgment on a range of issues

Ability to handle emergencies
