History Instructor (Associate Professor)

THE COMMUNITY

San Joaquin Delta College is a modern comprehensive community college serving more than 20,000 students of diverse backgrounds. Serving the community for more than fifty years, Delta has a proud history of both academic and athletic success. The College offers day and evening programs; internet based education as well as community education. In recent years, Delta has expanded and improved the main campus in Stockton with a new library, a new student services building, and improved athletic fields. The Mountain House facility offers expanded local programs for west Bay Area residents. The total full time staff numbers approximately 550.

The College is located in the great central valley of California with a population of 290,000 diverse residents. This is a beautiful agricultural and wine growing region near a large urban center that features art and cultural opportunities such as symphony and theatre. The city has minor league baseball and hockey teams and an inland seaport. Located 50 miles south of Sacramento and just an hour away from San Francisco and Silicon Valley, Stockton offers affordable housing and good schools. The city has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, the Mother Lode country and the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Stockton area boasts warm sunny days and evening breezes from the Delta waterways. These same waterways offer many recreational opportunities. The Stockton area also offers ample opportunities for advanced education.

THE POSITION

Under the general supervision and direction of the Division Dean of Humanities, Social Science, Education, and Athletics, the primary responsibility of the person assigned to this position is teaching courses in the discipline of History.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Instruct courses in History to meet the educational requirements stated in the credit course outlines.

2. Assist the Division Dean to cooperate with campus and community groups to provide programs, courses, and information relevant to the needs of the students and the program.

3. Assist the Division Dean in the preparation of required reports by providing requested information.

4. Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review and modification.

5. Complete various reporting procedures as required for student evaluation, course reporting and budget development.

6. Attend various departmental, divisional, and campus-wide activities as stipulated.

7. Participate in departmental, divisional and campus-wide committees as part of the shared-governance process.

8. Participate in divisional committees as assigned by the Division Dean.

9. Perform other necessary duties which assure the smooth functioning of the Division, as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.

10.Use technology for teaching and management of online course information. Familiarity and ability to teach in a distance learning environment.

11.Teach in a large lecture format.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's in history OR Bachelor's in history AND Master's in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women's studies, social science, or ethnic studies.

Demonstrated teaching experience.

Sensitivity to and demonstrated success teaching in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, ethnic environment such as a community college.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience teaching courses in African American History, Asian Pacific American History or Mexican American History.

Earned doctorate in history. Experience in teaching survey courses in history.

Demonstrated ability and desire to stay current in the field and commitment to high academic standards.

Experience teaching postsecondary courses, especially at the community college level.
Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to different levels of students' ability and learning styles.

Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to students from different cultures and ethnic groups.

Demonstrated ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment.

Demonstrated leadership ability and desire to stay current in the field.

Demonstrated leadership and ability to work with community groups and the schools in order to coordinate the educational program with the needs of the community.

Desire and willingness to make the educational programs successful.
