The School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NYis expanding its professional undergraduate and graduate programs and seeks qualified candidates to fill two positions at the level of Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) Professor. Successful candidates will begin in the Fall 2014.
The School of Architecture
The School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY is part of one of the oldest and most accomplished technological universities in the U.S. Renowned for its contemporary, interdisciplinary and forward-looking professional and research programs including the Lighting Research Center [LRC], the New York City-based Center for Architecture Science and Ecology [CASE], and the Architectural Acoustics program, the school is committed to new forms of innovation and discovery as we prepare our graduates for leadership in the profession. The successful candidates will have opportunity to take advantage of Rensselaer’s extensive interdisciplinary resources.
Architectural Design / Building Technology
This new faculty member will provide expertise in fundamental and advanced architectural and environmental design/technology instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels and offer seminars, design studios and/or lecture courses related to the candidate’s specific area of expertise. She/He will advance architectural knowledge through creative practice, contemporary design and/or environmental technology research and scholarship while being mindful of the discipline’s diverse challenges. The successful candidate will play a significant role in a collaborative faculty initiative to champion the important reciprocity between emergent and performance-driven design. Combining an interest in both the art and science of architecture, the faculty member will contribute to the school’s commitment to creating next-generation built environments based upon interdisciplinary research relationships with faculty in the other schools at Rensselaer.
Duties and responsibilities include teaching both core and elective courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and continuing in the development of his/her research and scholarship. Successful candidates will contribute substantially to the intellectual content of the undergraduate and graduate architectural curricula and to sustain and link a substantial research and scholarly enterprise to the innovative practice of architecture.
Candidates seeking appointment at the level of tenure track Assistant Professor must have completed a Master’s or Doctorate degree (or foreign degree equivalent) in architecture, or a terminal degree in a closely related field. Degree requirements must be complete at the start of the appointment. Candidates must be engaged in pursuing a record of design, scholarly research and/or nationally recognized journals that demonstrate a contribution to the teaching or practice of architecture. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate promise of success as an educator. At the rank of tenured Associate Professor, candidates must meet the educational requirements for the rank of Assistant Professor, and must have tenure at a peer institution. Candidates without tenure must demonstrate an emerging national reputation in research and/or scholarship, a significant record of quality of educational activities as evidenced by at least three years of teaching and advising evaluations, and a substantial level of service to their home institution and profession.
