Southern Connecticut State University, a comprehensive university providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate education in New Haven, Connecticut, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Southern seeks a strong, experienced, and visionary academic leader, committed to liberal arts education, the University’s mission of excellence and inclusion, and shared governance, who also has a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship. The new Dean will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated, student-oriented faculty, the Deans’ Council, the Provost, and Dr. Mary Papazian, Southern’s new president, to continue to strengthen the School’s programs and increase its resources.
Founded in 1893 as New Haven Normal School, Southern has evolved to its current status as a modern, diversified center of higher learning with both undergraduate and graduate programs. One of four comprehensive universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, the cornerstones of its mission are excellence, social justice, access, and engagement. The School of Arts and Sciences is the cornerstone of a comprehensive University that prides itself on the mature and supportive interactions between the School of Arts and Sciences and the University’s thriving professional schools. With some 4,300 majors and 255 full-time faculty, it is also the largest school in the University. Its 22 departments and programs offer undergraduate majors and/or minors in 40 areas of study, and graduate degrees in 13 areas of study. In addition, it supports the Liberal Education Program, Southern’s rigorous new general education curriculum, and plays a major role, in partnership with Student Affairs, in the comprehensive First-Year Experience program. It is also the home of the University’s Honors College and a major force in the University’s developing emphasis on global learning.
The preferred candidate will be an experienced administrator with a strong record as a teacher and scholar, a history of significant leadership and administrative experience, a commitment to liberal learning and the University’s mission of excellence and inclusion, and the ability to provide collegial leadership in an environment of shared governance.
