Xavier University is a private university located in Cincinnati, Ohio, providing a liberal arts education in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. Position Summary:

Xavier University is in the midst of formalizing a new strategic plan. At the heart of the plan is an increased focus on student learning and development. A key outcome of that focus will be graduating students who are ready to pursue professional work, further their education in professional or graduate school, or engage in other meaningful activities that align with their passions. The Career Development Office will play a key role in helping students to meet this desired outcome.

To that end, the Assistant Director will be part of team charged with engaging students in career planning and development. He or she will work as part of a University wide system which will ensure that each student at Xavier has developed a plan which integrates their personal, academic and professional goals. While it is important for students to plan for what they will do after graduation, Xavier considers it equally important that student also consider who they will become as citizens in a global world. The Assistant Directors and the career coaches who support them are key contributors to creating and actualizing these plans.

The successful candidate will be innovative and collaborative, able to help the institution further its progress in establishing itself as leader in the field of career development. He or she will be adept at operating in an environment with many constituents including but not limited to students, deans, faculty, alumni, advisors, directors of student services units, parents, and employers. A strong understanding of student development of traditional age undergraduates, adults returning to school and graduate students is desired. Finally a relentless commitment to student success is key.

Note that Xavier has two Assistant Director positions open. One will coordinate programs, events, and services for students, alumni, faculty, and staff in the College of Arts & Sciences and one for the Williams College of Business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•Provide both general and major-specific career programming and events commensurate with university-wide needs.

◦Create, plan, and implement career-related educational programs and BPP events
◦Teach career development-related courses as needed
◦Provide assistance to job fairs and large events as needed

•Provide career counseling to Xavier students and alumni

◦Facilitate various career assessments including, but not limited to, MBTI, Strong, Career Leader, and MyPlan
◦Provide career counseling for topics such as academic major and career exploration, internship and job search strategies, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing techniques, and graduate school preparation
◦Provide walk-in counseling services

•Develop and maintain internal and external relationships with academic departments, administrative departments, and employer partners

◦Serve as primary liaison to select academic departments within assigned College
◦Serve as liaison to designated departments and university committees as assigned
◦Develop and conduct in-class and student club presentations on career planning and job-search topics; respond promptly to faculty needs
◦Actively initiate and maintain partnerships with administrators, faculty, staff, and students to educate university community about career services and to develop and facilitate successful student career planning programs
◦Assist with employer research in support of the department recruiting and employer development efforts
◦Develop and maintain community partnerships and relationships to assist with employer development and community relations
◦Work with other Assistant Directors and Associate Director to integrate career-related services between Colleges

•Supervise the work of the Career Counselor(s) assigned to their College.

◦Supervise the career counseling, walk-in appointments, classroom presentations, and career workshops of career counselor(s)
◦Supervise employer relations activities conducted by career counselor(s) in their College
◦Supervise liaison-related activities and ensure that integration of services occurs within their College
◦Conduct performance appraisals and attend to the professional development needs of career counselor(s)

•Perform administrative and additional office leadership tasks

◦Write, design, edit, produce, and oversee development of office publications and promotional materials including brochures, handouts, forms, flyers, and posters as needed and/or in conjunction with Marketing Assistant
◦Research and gather up-to-date information to provide clients with accurate, current, and concise resource materials; keep abreast of industry and graduate/professional school trends
◦Share in office supervision of support staff and student assistants
◦Accept additional duties when requested or assigned

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field of study, 2-5 years of work experience relevant to the position.
