Upper Iowa University (UIU) seeks an exceptional leader with a higher education background to assume the presidency in July 2013. The new President will build upon the work of Dr. Alan G. Walker, who, over the last eight years, led the dedicated faculty and staff through a period of unprecedented expansion and growth in enrollment, student profile, facilities, and international footprint.
Founded in 1857 with a mission of providing access to reasonably priced, quality education, Upper Iowa is a private, not-for-profit institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association. UIU participates in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) of the HLC, which emphasizes continuous academic quality improvement. UIU has a residential campus of around 1000 students in Fayette, Iowa and operates 19 domestic educational centers from Wisconsin to Arizona. Online and independent study programs, plus campuses in Hong Kong and Malaysia, bring the global enrollment to over 6,200 students. UIU is the second largest private university and the only NCAA Division II institution in Iowa. The university has a robust athletics program supporting 7 intercollegiate sports for women and 6 for men, and is a member of the prestigious Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
Diversity is an important part of Upper Iowa’s mission and this is reflected in its students. Domestically, over 20 percent of UIU students are non-white. Additionally, there are over 150 international students, from 30 different countries, studying at the Fayette campus.
UIU’s President will be responsible for providing strategic leadership for the institution, and working with the leadership team will provide comprehensive oversight and accountability for academic, administrative, financial and all other operations. The President will take a prominent role in external relations with the university's stakeholders and in advancing the university’s reputation and financial resources, including significant efforts in fundraising and alumni relations. Additionally, the new President will have the opportunity to shape UIU for years to come through implementing a new board-supported organizational structure designed to further the university’s mission and selecting the university’s first Provost.
Upper Iowa seeks a President who, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and alumni, will lead the institution forward with a high level of personal integrity and inspiration, while emphasizing academic quality, financial responsibility, development of human resources, empowerment of individuals, transparency of communication, and a dedication to diversity and access.
