UNIVERSITY POLICE OFFICER I POSITIONS

The UM Department of Public Safety consists of a full-service police department that serves the UM campus 24 hours a day; 365 days a year. University Police Officers are commissioned by the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) and have full police authority. They work closely with a non-sworn security force to ensure the safety and protection of the campus. Typically, police officers respond to calls and requests for services via foot patrol, bike patrol, and vehicles. The department has a strong commitment to timely notifications of crime incidents that impact the safety of the campus. The University also sponsors University Police Officer (UPO) I hires through a Maryland Police Training Academy.

The University of Maryland in Baltimore, Department of Public Safety is currently recruiting for POLICE OFFICER I POSITIONS

University Police Officer I - Requires high school diploma or GED

REQUIREMENTS:

* Must be at least 21 years of age

* Must be a citizen of the United States

* Must have 20/100 (Snellen) vision the weaker eye and vision correctable to 20/30 in each eye and wear corrective lenses

* Must not have been convicted of a felony

* Must demonstrate physical ability to perform job

* Must work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on call, and as needed

* Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License

* Finalists will be required to complete a comprehensive background check, including drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.

Applicants who have prior military police experience or a degree in criminal justice and/or with prior security experience in an academic setting are preferred.

Successful candidates must have a stable work history and excellent oral and written communication skills. Finalists will be subject to a thorough background investigation, including polygraph examination.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class are required to achieve and maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission and must meet the minimum standards of appointment for Probationary Police Officer as established by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

Minimum Starting Salary: $38,200

Additional salary consideration will be given to selected candidates with current Maryland Police Training Commissions, prior military police experience, or a degree in criminal justice.
