Mills College
Provost and Dean of the Faculty Search

Mills College invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Dean of the Faculty.  The successful candidate will provide academic leadership to one of the West’s most renowned liberal arts colleges.

In 2012, the Board of Trustees appointed a new and dynamic President, Alecia A. DeCoudreaux, to lead the College.  Under her leadership, the College has embarked on an ambitious strategic planning process that will eventually lead to the creation of a bold, new vision for the institution.  To accelerate the College’s upward trajectory in its pursuit of academic excellence and the transformation of liberal arts education, the President and faculty of Mills College seek Provost and Dean of the Faculty candidates who are visionary, inspirational, and possess a commitment to innovation.

Founded in 1852, Mills College has been setting the standard for quality in liberal arts education for 160 years. Historically a college for women only, Mills continues that proud tradition today on the undergraduate level. To provide enhanced professional opportunities for all students, Mills also offers renowned graduate programs open to both women and men. Ranked fifth among top colleges in the West by U.S. News & World Report, Mills has also been named one of the top "Great Schools, Great Prices" for its high academic quality relative to the net cost of attendance.  The College continues, as it has since 1920, to offer graduate degrees to women and men. Mills is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of 42 members, including the president and 21 Mills alumnae.  Spanning 135 acres, Mills is located in the foothills of Oakland, California, on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay, within reach of the diverse metropolitan centers that make up the greater Bay Area.

The Provost and Dean of the Faculty is the chief academic officer of the College and represents the College and acts on College business in the absence of the President.  Additionally, the Provost and Dean of the Faculty advises the President on all academic matters and is responsible for maintaining and developing the academic programs including faculty development programs.  The Provost and Dean of the Faculty provides leadership for the Faculty; oversees all academic departments and academic support programs; and reviews all academic appointment, promotion, and tenure recommendations prior to the President's recommendation to the Board of Trustees.  The following positions report directly to the Provost/Dean of the Faculty: the Associate Provost, the deans of the Lokey Graduate School of Business; the School of Education; Graduate Literary Studies; the Assistant Dean and Director of the Art Museum, and the Director of Institutional Research, Planning, & Academic Assessment.

The ideal candidate will possess a commitment to women’s liberal arts education and to a liberal arts undergraduate college with strong graduate and professional programs.  He/she must also have a strong record of faculty advocacy.  The successful candidate will have an excellent record of scholarship/research and demonstrated commitment to high academic standards in a small college environment.  The new Provost and Dean of the Faculty must exhibit a management style that inspires confidence and promotes faculty teaching and research in support of the academic and research missions of the College.  He/she must also possess superior interpersonal skills and a track record of supporting diversity and promoting issues of social justice.

The Search Committee will continue to accept applications and nominations until the position is filled.  Screening of candidates will begin immediately.  Applications should include a letter of interest and a current curriculum vitae.  Submission of materials via e-mail is strongly preferred.  Nomination letters should include the name, position, address and telephone number of the nominee.  All nominations will be handled in strict confidence unless otherwise directed by the nominator.

Applications and letters of nomination should be submitted to:
