The University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for the position of Vice Chancellor, Research. UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is one of ten campuses in the University of California system. UCSC has earned international recognition for the impact of its research and the quality of its teaching, as well as for being a student-centered learning environment where undergraduates have the chance to work closely with distinguished faculty. Current enrollment at UCSC is over 17,000 students (approximately 15,600 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students). Undergraduates pursue course work in 55 majors and graduate students work toward doctoral degrees in 32 programs across the arts, humanities, engineering, social sciences, and physical and biological sciences as well as toward master’s degrees and graduate certificates in 25 academic fields.

Reporting to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, Research (VCR) is expected to bring broad vision and executive leadership to campus-wide research policy, coordination, compliance, planning, and advancement of strategic initiatives. In close collaboration with other Vice Chancellors, Vice Provosts, Deans and the faculty, the Vice Chancellor, Research has responsibility for supporting the growth of UC Santa Cruz’s innovative and multi-disciplinary research. In particular, the Vice Chancellor, Research will play a major role in strategy and implementation as the campus expands its research connections to Silicon Valley. The Vice Chancellor, Research holds a faculty appointment at UC Santa Cruz in addition to the Vice Chancellor position.

Responsibilities include:
Developing research funding and growth opportunities for all academic divisions across all funding sectors. Developing policies and procedures for research. Promoting and managing efficient technology transfer activities, including oversight of all aspects of intellectual property (IP) management, including IP identification, protection, and licensing, as well as training and assistance on IP matters in general. Providing oversight and guidance to ensure that research is conducted responsibly and ethically. Negotiating terms of contracts and grants with funding agencies. Providing oversight and ensuring compliance of the campus research environment with local, state, and federal regulations and requirements. Conducting regular reviews of research units. Providing leadership for off-campus research activities. Collaborating with the University Relations division to efficiently and effectively accept and process grants from charitable sources.

Minimum Qualifications:
National or international distinction as a scholar, researcher and educator with record appropriate for a position as full professor in the University of California. At least three years of senior administrative experience leading a large, complex organization, including responsibility for budget management, and general management of administrative functions. Experience working with complex policies and procedures in order to initiate and execute new contracts and grants with various individuals and agencies. Demonstrated excellence in managing, organizing, and supervising in order to meet goals. The experience and managerial ability to integrate the academic and administrative aspects of research at UCSC. Experience with intellectual property rights, including patents, and licensing. Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to listen to a variety of constituencies, synthesize input, make decisions and share information broadly to build consensus and support for actions. Demonstrated ability to foster strong partnerships and collaborations with government, industry and other research enterprises. The ability to stimulate new directions, to promote existing resources to the best advantage, and to build for the future. An appreciation of the dual research and educational missions of a major research university. Thorough understanding of the funding sources for research for a major research university. Current working knowledge and understanding of budgeting, financial control, and fiscal accountability. Successful record of experience and leadership in advancing diversity, inclusion, equal employment opportunity and affirmative action in research or higher education environments or comparable setting. Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to communicate and interact effectively with diverse constituencies within and outside the University.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
Previous contract and grant fund development experience. Experience in the marketing and transfer of rights to intellectual property. Previous experience managing and promoting technology transfer activities. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing administrative processes with an emphasis on providing quality customer-oriented services and managing growth and change in a large, complex higher education organization.

Salary: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Available: July 1, 2013 (negotiable).
