THE PROGRAM IN WRITING AND RHETORIC
Stanford University seeks a number of highly qualified lecturers to develop and teach intensive first and second-year writing courses in its Program in Writing and Rhetoric, a program in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE).
The Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) teaches courses that fulfill the undergraduate writing and rhetoric requirement. PWR offers approximately 200 courses a year, taught seminar/workshop style in classes of 15 students each. These small classes emphasize the development of each student’s analytical and research-based writing. Individual classes explore writing, rhetoric, and research from a range of thematic perspectives and disciplinary contexts. The second course in the requirement includes increased attention to the interweaving of writing and technology and to the study and development of oral and multimedia texts to expand students’ understanding of contemporary language and argument. We seek applicants with experience and interests in a broad range of disciplinary backgrounds, including those of the natural sciences, engineering and the social sciences.
Lecturers will be responsible for developing syllabi for their sections in accord with course and assignment guidelines developed by PWR. Lecturers will also participate in professional development activities available through the program, including formal training in rhetoric, composition, and writing pedagogy. Additional responsibilities of lecturers in PWR include work in the Hume Writing Center supporting the writing development of all Stanford students and substantive service on program committees; lecturers will also have the opportunity to participate in writing initiatives across the campus and in individual departments and programs. Lecturers will join a lively community of teachers, writers, and researchers, including Stanford faculty, other lecturers, and graduate students from a range of disciplines.
Qualifications: Candidates should hold an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred); while many PWR lecturers come from English Studies or a related field, we encourage candidates from all fields with demonstrated excellence in teaching and strong interests in the teaching of writing and communication more generally.
Initial appointments of lecturers will be made for a term of at least one year beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, with a start date of September 1, 2013. The appointment may be renewable contingent on satisfactory performance and programmatic need and may eventually lead to the opportunity to apply for promotion to the rank of advanced lecturer or senior lecturer, contingent on rigorous review by appropriate university committees, programmatic need and available opportunities. Salary will be in the range of $56,000-$60,000.
