Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) announces a national search to recruit an outstanding leader for the position of Dean of the College of Dental Medicine.

Dean, College of Dental Medicine

The Enterprise

Founded in 1828, the Georgia Health Sciences enterprise is the state's only public academic health center. Its mission is to lead Georgia and the world to better health by providing excellence in biomedical education, discovery and service.

Georgia Health Sciences University offers more than 60 programs in its Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies and Nursing, as well as in the 13th-oldest and sixth-largest medical school in the nation, the Medical College of Georgia. In addition to housing the state¿s only college of Dental Medicine, GHSU's College of Allied Health Sciences and Graduate Nursing degree programs are the largest of their kind in the state.

GHSU graduates are among the best-prepared in the country, significantly impacting the health care, education and research workforce statewide and beyond. The university addresses current and emerging health care needs, educating highly skilled professionals in a technologically advanced environment. These technological advances include simulation training, distance-learning and Internet-based instruction, all of which have vastly increased access to a GHSU education.

The enterprise¿s distinction as the state's academic health center ensures access statewide and beyond to the highest-quality health care, the newest biomedical breakthroughs and cutting-edge technology. That impact will grow exponentially when Georgia Health Sciences University consolidates with its sister institution, Augusta State University, in 2013. This will create Georgia¿s fourth comprehensive research university and will soon become one of the nation¿s leading institutions of higher learning. GHSU President Ricardo Azziz will become President of the consolidated university, on a fast track toward becoming one of the nation's leading institutions of higher learning.

The College of Dental Medicine

As one of GHSU's five colleges and the state¿s only dental school, the College of Dental Medicine has remarkable promise for future growth. The College of Dental Medicine is a community of committed educational leaders and clinical practitioners who share a concern for the students of the College and the oral healthcare of the state of Georgia. As an integral unit of Georgia Health Sciences University, the College of Dental Medicine is committed to achieving academic excellence, providing optimal oral health care and actively engaging in research, scholarship and creative endeavors to meet the needs of the widely-dispersed and highly-diverse population of Georgia, the region, and the nation.

In fulfilling this mission, the College of Dental Medicine aspires to be recognized as one of the premier dental schools through outstanding education programs, excellence in patient care and leading-edge research and scholarship. The school is committed to the cultural, ethnic, racial and gender diversity of its faculty, staff, and student body. This commitment embraces interactive, ongoing partnerships with students, with patients and with the public in order to effectively serve those who seek a career, those who seek care, and those who seek knowledge.

The College offers the D.M.D. degree and specialty programs that include endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as a general practice residency and advanced education in general dentistry. The College's FY13 budget of $32.3 million supports the activities of 74 full time faculty members and 25 part time faculty and clinicians. There are 292 dental students and 56 residents and two interns affiliated with the College.

GHSU opened a new facility in the fall of 2011 and it is one of the largest in the nation. The new building is equipped with 316 dental chairs, and the advanced simulation and practice labs can accommodate 100 students at a time. The new facility also has a Class-C operating room and recovery room, making Georgia Health Sciences University one of the few colleges in the nation with an outpatient surgery center.
The department chairs and the offices of the students, admissions and alumni, curriculum and advanced education, patient services, and business operations report directly to the dean.

The Dean

The Dean will be the chief executive of the College and will lead the College in the development and support of strong educational, research, and clinical programs appropriate to the College¿s mission. The Dean will also be responsible for implementing University and College policies, overseeing all support services for the College and addressing the needs of students, faculty and staff. The Dean will foster the establishment of strategic goals of the College, coordinating the departments to achieve the College¿s mission in alignment with the initiatives to continue to advance research, patient care and academic programs.

In addition, the Dean will be a strong advocate for the College and will provide the vision and leadership to represent the College effectively in a complex health sciences and comprehensive university environment. The Dean will have budgetary authority and will be instrumental in recruiting outstanding faculty, students, and staff. The Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
