Dean, College of Fine Arts and Communication

The University of Missouri–St. Louis, a public metropolitan research university located in Missouri’s most populous and economically vital region, is seeking applications for the position of Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, to begin August, 2013. The College includes the Department of Art and Art History, the Department of Communication, the Department of Music, and the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Media Studies, as well as the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. The College currently enrolls over 900 majors and has 53 full time faculty members. The Dean is the chief administrative officer of the College, and reports directly to the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean’s responsibilities include overseeing the programs and administrative affairs of the College’s diverse academic programs and the Performing Arts Center, in order to promote excellent teaching, research, creative productivity, and community engagement.
Candidates for the position must hold a doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant discipline, have a significant record of leadership experience and budget responsibility at or above the departmental level, and possess a distinguished record of intellectual, scholarly/creative accomplishment commensurate with appointment as a tenured professor. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership within a context of shared governance and participatory decision making, effectiveness in advocacy and building consensus, success in fostering teaching, research, and creative excellence, astuteness in facing challenges, and willingness to embrace and promote innovation and change. The ability to appreciate the varied needs and interests of a college with a wide range of scholarship, including but not limited to empirical research and creative activity, is desirable.
