Job Description Summary:

The Licensing Associate will be responsible for undertaking activities leading to the commercialization of George Washington University technologies. These activities include identification and evaluation of market potential, valuation of technologies, management of patent prosecution, development and implementation of marketing plans, negotiating and drafting legal documents including term sheets, options and license agreements in the execution of approved strategies, and assisting with university spin-outs. Management of active licenses as assigned.

The selected candidate must be comfortable in building working relationships with busy professionals across the University and senior executives at companies. The candidate should also be comfortable in understanding a wide variety of technologies, and designing and implementing a commercialization strategy for technologies in multiple subject areas. The successful candidate will be an aggressive and energetic self-starter with a strong business network.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization, plus three years of relevant experience. Degree requirements may be substituted for an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational, interpersonal and management skills.

Desired Qualifications:

- Bachelors degree in engineering or physical science (not biology).

- 2 years of hands on experience in University technology transfer is desirable.

- Previous business development or entrepreneurial experience is desirable.

- Proficiency in personal computer and software application packages such as Inteum, MS Office and other basic productivity tools is desirable.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Job Duties

  • Develop and implement intellectual property strategies for obtaining patents and licensing patents and technologies to companies.

  • Negotiate license and other technology transfer agreements with companies. Serve as the point of contact for assigned licensees and other partners. Manage assigned licenses and new intellectual property-based relationships with companies and Universities.

  • Develop marketing summaries for technologies and inventions and market and license them to companies.

  • Source inventions and technologies from GWU faculty and researchers and maintain an optimal level of faculty/campus outreach in the assigned areas of the university.

  • Make financial models for valuation of significant intellectual property prior to licensing negotiation.

  • Performs other work related duties as assigned.

  • Provide periodical reports to OTT Director and Director of Office of Entrepreneurship and upper management as needed.
