Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials at University of Wollongong is a Flagship Research Strength and Electrification Program Leader of Australian Government funded Automotive Corporate Research Centre (Auto CRC). ISEM is a multidisciplinary research institute with wide research portfolio ranging from superconductors, magnetic and electronic materials, to renewable energy, energy storage materials technologies and solid state physics. The positions will be joint appointments between ISEM at University of Wollongong and University of Technology, Sydney, a UOW’s research partner in Auto CRC. Currently we have two openings in fields of lithium ion batteries and lithium air batteries for electrical vehicles.

Projects: Lithium ion batteries and lithium air batteries for electrical vehicles
Project 1: Lithium ion batteries
The proposed research program is aimed at achieving major advances in the development of next generation, high energy, and high power lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors with reduced cost and improved safety. The objective is to achieve high energy density of LIBs by using high voltage Li(MnNiCo)O2 cathode to deliver double the energy density of commercially available LIBs.
Project 2: Lithium-air batteries
Seek dramatic improvement of up to an order of magnitude in energy density through a proof-of-concept battery using lithium-air technology. Li-air batteries have a theoretical energy density of 11,680 Wh/kg and practically can reach 1700 Wh/kg which is an order of magnitude higher than state-of-the-art LIBs. However, the major challenges of electrochemical stability of both the electrolyte and the cathode must be addressed. This research component is focused on better understanding the operational chemistries in the Li-air battery. This position will be shared between UOW and UTS.
We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and highly skilled individuals with expertise in materials engineering, in particular lithium ion and lithium air batteries for automotive applications. You will be expected to perform high level research, actively participate in postgraduate student training, and have significant potential to attract external research funding through various funding agencies.
To succeed, you must have experience in a broad spectrum of materials fabrication and characterization techniques, have strong track record in terms of publications and competitive funding.
