Assistant Professor of Piano/Theory
Applicants are invited for the position of Assistant Professor of Piano/Theory in the Department of Music at Western Kentucky University. The department currently has 21 full-time and 18 part-time faculty and enrolls over 200 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Music in Performance and in Music Education, a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music, and Master of Music degrees in Music Education, Conducting, and Pedagogy. The department has recently enjoyed a construction boom with a $21M renovation of the 1000-seat Van Meter Hall, construction of a $9M Music Rehearsal Hall adjacent to the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center and renovation of existing space to create a new Percussion Suite. A fully accredited member of NASM since 1948, the department is progressive and highly active with a history of excellence.
The department seeks to hire a colleague to teach undergraduate/graduate applied piano and music theory/ear-training courses, and maintain an active schedule of performing and recruiting. Additional teaching areas will be determined by departmental needs and the candidate’s strengths.
Applicants for this position must hold a doctorate, with highly developed skills in piano performance and applied studio teaching. Applicants should also possess strong skills in music theory and ear training, with evidence of significant graduate-level study and course work in theory. Candidates for the position should provide evidence of significant performing experience as a recital soloist and chamber musician, teaching experience with college-level applied music and classroom theory, and successful strategies with recruitment and retention of college students.
