This position reports to the Assistant Vice President and Executive Director of SHCS. The Director provides senior leadership in the planning, implementation, coordination, assessment, and continuous improvement of counseling and mental health programs and services for more than 15,000 students, serves as a key liaison with University administration on mental health policy and practices, and encourages and enables the effective utilization of mental health services by students. The focus of this position is to ensure the provision of multidisciplinary mental health services that reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success.
Principal duties include: (1) leadership of mental health services; (2) oversight of clinical social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists; (3) participation in the SHCS senior leadership team; (4) campus liaison and consultation on mental health issues, including training liaison between the SCS and the Department of Psychiatry; (5) evaluation, development, and advising on University mental health policy and practices; (6) primary responsibility for the SCS budget; (7) development of long and short range goals and objectives to improve the overall effectiveness of mental health and counseling services; (8) service as spokesperson for the SCS with press and other external constituencies; and (9) service on and/or leadership of various University committees.
Candidates are required to have (1) a doctorate in clinical psychology or in medicine (with current Board certification in psychiatry); (2) at least 8 years’ post-doctoral clinical and 5 years of pertinent administrative experience supervising multidisciplinary clinicians and managing a clinical service; (3) eligibility for a non-compensated clinical associate appointment in the Biological Sciences Division; (4) eligibility for or possession of a current license to practice in the State of Illinois; and (5) a record of the application of evidence-based principles in clinical practice, including documentation of outcomes and/or demonstration of productive research and scholarship. The successful candidate will be a strong and engaged clinician and manager with an affinity for working in an interdisciplinary team. Experience in a college mental health setting is strongly preferred.
