The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private corporation located in Washington, DC providing a national voice and seeking positive change for postdoctoral researchers. Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall sustainability (including fund and grant development), management and operation of the NPA. The Executive Director should be a visionary and strategic leader who can work effectively at the intersections of academia, government, industry, professional societies, and funding organizations on issues pertaining to postdoctoral researchers. Successful candidates will have strong fundraising, organizational, administrative, and financial management skills. Strong written and oral communication skills are critical to ensure that the Executive Director will be effective and persuasive in presenting the NPA and its mission to its members, various government agencies, and other stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Executive Director:
-Leads the fundraising efforts of the NPA;
-Serves as an ex oficio member of the Board of Directors;
-Assists in the strategic planning of the Board of Directors;
-Coordinates the external relations of the NPA;
-Oversees the membership programs and services of the NPA;
-Oversees all accounting functions including auditing, budgeting, financial analysis (including quarterly financial reports), and payroll;
-Handles all aspects of human resource management for NPA staff (currently three in addition to the Executive Director);
-Is responsible for grants and contracts management;
-Analyzes and evaluates vendor services;
-Supports the Meetings Committee in planning, organizing and implementing all aspects of the NPA Annual Meeting and other NPA-sponsored meetings;
-Oversees staff support provided to the Board of Directors; and,
-Performs other duties as assigned by the Chair and the Board of Directors.
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Five to ten years managerial and fundraising experience in the non-profit sector and executive experience are highly preferred. Successful experience in fundraising, general management, financial management, and strategic planning is highly preferred. Knowledge of higher education and the scientific research enterprise strongly desired. Successful candidates will have experience that will demonstrate the ability to conceptualize, develop, and evaluate programs. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
