Reporting to the Director of Residence, the Associate Director of Residence provides strategic leadership and daily administration for a dynamic residence life unit. The Associate Director is responsible for creating positive living/learning communities and for shaping environments that support students’ academic success and personal growth. This position provides leadership and direction for the residence life unit which includes a focus on academic success, multicultural student services, leadership and community development, staff development and supervision, administrative responsibilities, and an assessment program. Through participation in a central decision-making and planning group, directs long range fiscal, facility, and administrative policies for the total department. The Associate Director must have a high standard of integrity, excellent judgment, and the ability to manage conflicts and crisis situations in addition to strong skills in the areas of creative problem solving, communication, decision making, and delegation. Effective delegation of task/project responsibilities (including outcomes assessment) to staff supervised by this position is imperative in order to be successful. Knowledge of the academic/faculty culture is important. A strong commitment to diversity and creating a multicultural inclusive environment is essential. Lastly, the successful candidate will have a collegial and engaging interpersonal style. The position oversees 26 full-time staff with 8 direct reports, approximately 8 graduate students and 200 undergraduate student staff, and manages a $2.8 million budget. This position has a very high profile at Iowa State and the Associate Director works collaboratively with a wide variety of institutional stakeholders including a broad array of Student Affairs offices and faculty in the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies graduate program.
Required qualifications: A bachelor's degree and six years of progressively responsible experience in residence life/housing OR a master's degree and four years of progressively responsible experience in residence life/housing. The degree must be in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or a related area.
Preferred qualifications: Experience supervising, mentoring, and motivating a large and diverse staff. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with faculty and staff to create academic environments. Experience with student development and leadership development theory to guide program goals; assessment/research techniques; organizational development; fiscal planning and budget management; and program assessment and strategic planning. Experience which demonstrates success in cultivating relationships and creating collaborative partnerships with staff, faculty, students, parents, and numerous stakeholder groups. A doctorate or other terminal degree is also a preferred qualification.
