Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Finance and working in close collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer at Barnard College, Columbia University, leads strategic budgeting efforts, is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the College’s annual operating and capital budgets, analyzes financial results and trends, develops and administers automated budget systems, serves as a signatory for the disbursement of College funds, works with the Controller’s Office to reconcile year-end closing, and communicates budgetary issues to the campus at large. The Director prepares forecasts and variance reports for the Board of Trustees and other key constituencies, and then identifies trends and recommends corrective action if necessary. He or she also designs and implements reports to support management decision-making and provide timely information to senior administrators throughout the College. In conjunction with the President and Chief Operating Officer, the Director leads or participates in “zero-based” budget reviews of programs and activities of the College.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field such as finance, accounting, or public administration; master’s degree in business or public administration or CPA/CMA certification preferred. Six to eight years of progressively responsible budgeting experience, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting is required. Hands-on experience developing, implementing, and monitoring budgets in integrated financial accounting systems is required, along with experience in the development and distribution of electronic financial management reports. Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills, including the development of complex spreadsheets and relational databases is required.
