Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The College of Education prepares teachers, administrators, counselors, researchers and analysts for careers in education from K-12 to post-secondary. It emphasizes global cultural awareness and the use of technology for enhanced learning.
The mission of the Department of Elementary Education at North Carolina State University is to develop teacher leaders who have a deep, general content knowledge with a focus in science and mathematics, expert pedagogy, and a commitment to equity and social justice.
The Department of Elementary Education within the College of Education offers both a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Masters in Elementary Education. Both of these programs are uniquely designed to prepare education professionals for the 21st century. In addition, students will be prepared to teach diverse populations.
Essential Job Duties:
Establish and maintain a scholarly research, publication, and grant-writing record in Elementary Education that is aligned with a Research University (very high research activity);
Work with Elementary Mathematics Education program and with the Mathematics Education graduate program;
Contribute to the overall departmental mission through research, teaching and service;
Teach undergraduate and graduate mathematics methods courses to prospective elementary teachers;
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on mathematics education;
Work with the Mathematics Specialist M.Ed. program;
Provide advising for undergraduate and graduate students;
Assist in department and college outreach;
Assist in ongoing program revision and assessment; and
Collaborate with faculty in other departments and colleges to strengthen courses for elementary teachers.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Earned doctorate in Elementary Education, Mathematics Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, Learning Sciences, or related fields with a research focus related to elementary education and mathematics education;
Potential to establish or proven scholarly research and publication record appropriate for a Research University (very high research activity) – breadth and depth of scholarly work needs to be commensurate with rank
Strong methodological training in research;
Capacity to teach elementary mathematics methods courses;
Capacity to teach courses focused on mathematics education; and
Commitment to diversity, social justice, innovation, and collaboration in working with schools and university colleagues.
Departmental Required Skills:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
A minimum of three years teaching experience in K-8 schools or equivalent settings;
Expertise working with diverse student populations, especially English-language learners;
Experience in integrating technology into teaching; and
Interest in potential collaboration with other faculty who work in areas such as STEM education, literacy education, and digital humanities.
