Nature of Work: This is a highly responsible position assisting in the administration of the institution's benefits programs (60%) and payroll (40%). This position involves processing time-sensitive data entry, calculating and verifying to record data for use in processing the payroll. An employee assigned to this position will assist in counseling employees in their individual benefits plans, assisting with problems, explaining and/or advising on existing and additional options, assisting in the maintenance of personnel records, preparing personnel reports, assisting in employee classification and in salary surveys. Work is performed with considerable dependence of the Lead Benefits Counselor and the Payroll Manager. This individual will report to the Human Resources Director.
Training and Experience: A two year degree required in accounting, business, management, social sciences or a combination of training and experience required; must have at least five years experience working in an office environment; significant knowledge of principles and practices of payroll and benefits administration required; Automated Data Processing (ADP) experience preferred, good organizational skills necessary; the ability to communicate effectively.

Illustrative Examples of Work: This position is responsible for assisting the Lead Benefits Counselor (60%) and Payroll Specialist II (40%) in administering the University's benefit and payroll programs for all eligible faculty, staff, retirees and students. Programs include the medical and dental insurance, life insurance, short-term disability insurance, medical and flexible spending accounts, and the workers' compensation medical leave. Responsibilities include communication of information to employees and retirees. Responsible for assisting the Lead Benefits Counselor in providing employees information pertaining to their benefits, to include eligibility and enrollment. Assists with orientation for newly hired faculty and staff and exit interviews. Assist in benefits counseling and absence management to include maternity leave, adoption leave, leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, ADA, workers' compensation leave, short-term disability, vacation, sick and military leave. Processes and maintains vacation/sick leave report. Responsibilities include verifying leave application for accuracy and appropriate approval. Assists with dissemination of various policies such as Worker's Compensation, Sexual Harassment, FMLA, ADA, COBRA and employment procedures. Assists in administering the hiring process and base benefits through the ADP system. Provides administrative support to the Lead Benefits Counselor and Payroll Specialist II. Responsible for receiving and notating performance evaluations on staff employees. Responsibilities include verifying that an evaluation is received on all eligible employees and filed in Human Resources Management. Completes employment verifications in a timely manner. Maintains files for payroll deductions such as ASU Foundation, Alumni, DOCO Credit Union, AFLACS, garnishments, child support orders, tax levies, etc. Transmits payments for payroll vendors via internet billing, certified U.S. mail, and Federal Express and ensures that they are remitted and received by each vendor by the 10th day after the monthly payroll's check date. Ensures the accessibility and retrieval of all payroll records by mode of paper documentation or via CD's. Updates and maintains payroll master lists. Assists with the transmission of files as needed. Responsible for maintaining flexible spending reimbursement accounts. Interprets and keeps abreast of all Board of Regents, federal and state policies, laws, and changes relative to benefits and payroll activities. Performs balance of payroll liabilities after each payroll and verifies payroll transactions. Assists with the completion of payroll salary surveys requested from various agencies and within the University. Collaborates with the Shared Services Center for employee resolutions.
