Position Information:
Under general direction of the C&C Associate Director of Computing Infrastructure and Security (CIS), and the Manager of Virtualization, Security, and Identity Management, support the CIS group in the development and deployment of student virtualized desktops and other student systems as required.
Responsibilities include managing the support and monitoring of the computer systems that provide the services C&C offers to students. This includes, but is not limited to, systems that comprise the virtual hosting infrastructure as well as web servers, database servers, and media servers related to student services.
Funding for this position is confirmed for 2 1/2 years and there is a possibility that this position will be extended beyond the 2 1/2 years.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
Demonstrated experience with VMware technology including Windows and Linux virtual machine creation and maintenance, VMware ESXi, VMware View, vSphere and vCenter.
Experience with VMware View (VMware VDI) or similar VDI environment including setup, maintenance and management of virtualized desktops.
Experience with deploying and managing Microsoft Windows desktops and administration via Microsoft Active Directory.
Experience with non-virtual systems security and virtual systems security technologies including vShield.
Experience managing VMware backups with VDR, VDP, or similar technology.
Knowledge of advanced VMware management technologies including vOps.
Knowledge of Unix and Linux systems support, and familiarity with system administration tasks such as configuration management, installing OS and application updates, and backups.
Ability to troubleshoot system problems, including virtual systems issues, and identify their root cause.
Familiarity with security issues relating to enterprise systems, including operating system management, hardware-based and host-based firewalls.
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to enable effective collaboration with colleagues as well as other groups and managers to collectively and cooperatively develop, deploy and support enterprise-wide services.
Preferred Qualifications:
VMware certification in End User Computing, Datacenter Virtualization or Cloud.
Three to five years of related experience.
Demonstrated experience with VMware View (VMware VDI) or similar VDI environment including setup, maintenance and management of virtualized desktops.
Experience working in a higher education environment.
Familiarity with one or more scripting (e.g. bash, perl) or programming language.
Education and/or experience equivalent to a master's degree in Computer Science or related field.
Significant experience with Windows servers.
Significant experience with Solaris.
Significant experience with Linux, in particular Ubuntu Server.
Knowledge of web applications and their development, including knowledge of Java, PHP, and Perl, as well as data exchange protocols (XML and variants).
