Job Description-Overview :
The specialty areas (Cardiology, Clinic Technical Support, Hemodialysis, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Special Procedures Technical Support) of the Small Animal Medicine Section provide high quality medical care to their patients and assistance to their respective services. The Ophthalmology service is a busy and sometimes stressful service which provides care to a variety of species including cats, dogs, horses, camelids and exotic pets. In addition, this section creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and house staff with regards to each of the services.
This position will provide coverage to all the specialty services as required by the demands of the daily schedule. However, a major component of the weekly time will be spent working directly with the ophthalmology service. This position must learn how each department operates and be able to fill in without hesitation. Duties will include:
- Treatment of medical cases (outpatient & inpatient),
- Surgical cases (prepping, setups, assisting, & post-op medical management),
- Perform anesthesia for special procedures,
- Perform various special procedures,
- Begin patient examination process for each service and round with the clinician on the case,
- After appropriate training, this position must be able to perform the required diagnostic procedures as requested by the service, instruct veterinary students on topics pertaining to each service and be familiar with all the lab work, documentation and stocking and cleanliness of exam rooms.
Job Description - Requirements :
Basic Requirements: Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology or other animal biology related field with minimum of 3 years experience in a veterinary hospital with demonstrated leadership. CVT or licensure eligible. Basic computer skills; strong math skills. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications: Five or more years' experience in a small animal practice. A degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent and a current CVT/RVT license are preferred. Candidate should possess the ability to handle a high caseload and stressful situations in a professional manner. Following direction and prioritizing the workload is a necessity. Candidate should have an excellent understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with veterinary pharmacology. Prior experience with an emphasis in anesthesia preferred. Technical abilities should include patient restraint, good venipuncture skills, good working knowledge and skill in anesthesia, knowledge of medicating, monitoring and treating a variety of patients. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills in relating to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff and clients. Prior leadership role is desirable. Must be able to work well independently as well as part of a team. Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude. Flexibility with work schedule is a must.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Hours will be scheduled mainly between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm but the potential for some evening hours and a weekend day shift exists. Candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests. This position is considered essential and therefore must report to work in the event of campus closings.
