FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The City University of New York (CUNY) and Hunter College are in the midst of the Decade of Science. Hunter College is expanding its research capacity and profile and achieving new heights of academic distinction. An integral part of that effort is through the work of The Center for Study of Gene Structure and Function (Gene Center) at Hunter College, which is supported by the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Program (RCMI) of the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health. The Gene Center fosters unique inter-disciplinary collaborations among biologists, chemists, biopsychologists, biophysicists, and bioanthropologists and provides a vibrant research environment marked by workshops on cutting-edge research techniques; frequent research colloquia by guest scientists; and an annual international symposium, which is a major event on the New York scientific calendar. Faculty of the Gene Center are highly respected leaders engaging in research that is recognized and rewarded at the highest levels. Complementing the faculty and contributing to the success of the research enterprise at the Gene Center are state-of-the art core facilities, including digital bio-imaging, flow cytometry, NMR, a new Animal Care Facility, and an internet2 Video Collaboration Facility. The Gene Center is completing the first year of a five year, $15.3 Million grant from RCMI, has 19 active research scientist members and 33 associate members as well as 4 post-docs from across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology whose research focus is in the area of cancer, neuroscience, bioinformatics, and telehealth. The Gene Center is also a key partner in the Clinical and Translational Science Center, an enterprise that also includes the Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Hospital for Special Surgery, and the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. Hunter College seeks an outstanding scholar to serve on its faculty and as Director of the Gene Center.
The Director will have responsibility for setting the overall strategic and operational direction of the Gene Center, managing its substantial relationships with other research institutions and entities, overseeing its budget and personnel, attracting and developing outstanding researchers, including minority research faculty and developing innovative proposals for external funding opportunities.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop a road map for making the Gene Center a more effective force in research, publication, and education.
- Broaden the scientific areas within the Gene Center's core areas of expertise.
- Develop, promote, and nurture interactions with the Gene Center's main partner, Weill Cornell Medical
College, through the Clinical Translational Science Center (CTSC ) collaboration.
- Assist in recruiting faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate researchers in continuing to diversify the composition the Gene Center.
- Develop media communications to promote advances of the program.
- Advance community outreach strategies.
- Create and nurture contacts with professional societies to enhance the functioning of the Gene Center.
- Supervise the local area network and the Internet2 Video Collaboration Facility.
- Organize the annual symposium.
- Maintain communication with NIH/RCMI staff, College administration, the Translational Research Advisory Committee, and the Hunter Internal and External Advisory Committees.
- Promote interest in the RCMI Translational Research Network.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent.
