Job Description:
SUNY Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning (CDL) seeks applications for an Associate Dean. We are interested in an experienced professional with excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt to a changing and dynamic environment. The Associate Dean provides collaborative leadership for our robust online program in areas such as student and academic support, enrollment management and retention, mentoring and advising, faculty development, and our adjunct faculty review process. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the Center for Distance Learning and shares leadership of the center with the Dean and two Associate Deans. This is an essential role at the center that involves active engagement in policy and procedural issues, including both strategic planning and day-to-day problem solving. This position requires ongoing communication and interaction with nearly fifty full-time faculty members at our center in Saratoga Springs, New York, and at several regional locations around the state, as well as a large group of adjunct and part time faculty and mentors who work at a distance. The Associate Dean supervises professional employees including our Director of Student and Academic Services and a team of Assistant Area Coordinators who work closely with full-time and adjunct faculty. This is a team based environment that promotes collaboration among faculty, professionals, administrators and support staff. The Associate Dean participates in high level strategic planning, through college-wide meetings and other leadership committees and opportunities. The Associate Dean joins a peer group of Associate Deans working in regional centers and other academic programs around the state.
The Center for Distance Learning is the largest provider of online learning in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, serves approximately 8,000 students annually and manages 25,000 enrollments in online courses. The Center for Distance Learning is a mature program with 500 fully online courses, blended learning opportunities, and open learning innovations such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). In 2011, our center was the recipient of the prestigious Sloan Consortium award for Excellence in Faculty Development for Online Teaching. Online services include academic advising, student and faculty orientation, peer tutoring, assessment of prior learning, and development programs along with all administrative services. We have a global presence with our International Distance Learning (IDL) and through our partnership with the college-wide International Programs. Special programs enhance diversity in our student population. They include targeted programs with the military, corporations, organizations and unionized employee groups. Our students are primarily working adults, with the average age of students in their 30’s.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university; faculty experience; demonstrated leadership in college-level teaching, including academic quality and curricular diversity; ability to supervise high-level professional staff and personnel; excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills; and a commitment to cultural sensitivity.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who have both faculty and academic administrative experience in higher education and an interest in a career in academic administration. Experience with adult learners, multiple pedagogies, and blended or online learning preferred. Experience leading innovative teaching and learning initiatives is preferred.
Special Information (i.e., weekend hours, travel, etc.):
This is a Management/Confidential position in which employees serve at the pleasure of the president. Work location is in Saratoga Springs, NY. A small amount of travel to other parts of the college may be required along with occasional evening and weekend obligations.
